It has been scientifically verified through many studies that could critically
influence workers' job performance with just one factor of indoor environmental
performance. Meanwhile, most aspects of indoor environmental performance in
office buildings interact and affect the worker through a complex process.
However, related studies were conducted with different types and weights of
indoor environmental performance factors without any common standard. In
addition, most studies focus only on the direct impact of indoor environmental
performance factors on workers' job performance. Whereas many hypotheses have
been published that indoor environmental performance indirectly affects job
performance. Accordingly, it is necessary to study the indirect impact of indoor
environmental performance on job performance by deriving an unknown parameter
between indoor environmental performance and job performance. Therefore, this
study proposes a weighting system for indoor environmental performance factors
based on objective data. Furthermore, it intends to offer a structural model for the
indirect impact of indoor environmental performance on job performance.
First, objective data were collected through computer-based competency tests
to evaluate job performance and presented individual weights for four indoor
environmental performance factors: thermal comfort, visual comfort, acoustic
comfort, and air quality. Individual weights for objective data-based indoor
environmental performance factors can be summarized as follows: thermal comfort:
36.5%, visual comfort: 8.4%, acoustic comfort: 30.7%, and air quality: 24.4%.
Second, the indirect effect of indoor environmental performance on job
performance was examined through emotion as a medium. The following two
research hypotheses were established to confirm the unrevealed parameters
between indoor environmental performance and job performance: (i) emotion is
the result of changes in the physiological response of the body, and (ii) job
performance will be affected by the occupant's emotion induced by indoor
environmental performance. Partial least squared-structure equation modeling
(PLS-SEM) was used to verify the two interrelated research hypotheses and
analyze the mediating effects. As a result, It was found that the effect of indoor
environmental performance on job performance had an indirect impact through
dominance as a medium, an emotion induced by skin conduction.
Suppose it refers to the individual weights of the objective data-based indoor
environmental performance factors derived from this study. In that case, it can
manage the indoor environmental performance of office buildings so that they can
effectively improve their job performance rather than relying on the subjective
judgment of the worker. Furthermore, future smart offices can collect human
bio-signals and emotions using this study results and manage indoor
environmental performance based on them. This study is expected to be a new
starting point for future research on indoor environmental performance
management of smart offices.
