Electrochemical redruction of nickel complexes of nitrogen-oxygen donor macrocyclic lagand, [Ni(O-en-N-tnH₄)Cl₂] and [Ni(O-tn-N-tnH₄)Cl₂]were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and polarography at mercury electrode in dimethylsulfoxide solvent.
The electrochemical oxidation for the complexes were reversible one electron step, and the reduction of the complexes were irreversible one electron-two step reduction. The first reduction peak potential (at-114V)of[Ni(O-tn-N-tnH₄)Cl₂]was nearly the same as that of [Ni(O-en-N-tnH₄)Cl₂]but the second reduction peak potential (at-1.65V)of[Ni(O-tn-N-tnH₄)Cl₂]was more negative than the latter complex. It was proposed that the coordinated chloride ion in the complex were displaced by 4-picoline which was added to the compex solution and the nickel(Ⅰ)ion in the reduced product took more interaction with picoline than the oxygen donor atom of the macrocyclic ligand.
