    Objective: The study was conducted to assess the prevalence, changes and risk factors of depression and anxiety, and address the counter measures among migrant workers during and after COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea.

    Methods: A total of 415 migrant workers participated in this study, both during and after COVID-19. Depression and anxiety were considered as the dependent variables, while the major independent variables included age, gender, monthly income, living type, education, employment status, access to social relief funds, health fears, working conditions, and self-assessed health status. Depression and anxiety were measured using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale and General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale. All statistical analyses were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics Ver.23.0.

    Results: Migrant workers exhibited higher means of depression (15.99±5.16 vs. 8.78±5.77) and anxiety scores (11.02±4.45 vs. 6.97±4.42) during the COVID-19 compared to after the COVID-19. The prevalence of severe depression (30.4% vs. 8.2%, p = 0.038) and severe anxiety (24.1% vs. 5.3%, p = 0.047) was significantly higher during the COVID-19 than after the pandemic. Difference-in-differences (DID) analysis revealed that there were significant changes in depression scores due to living status (0.12±11.10, p=0.030) and employment status (0.44 ± 10.33, p=0.043), while changes in anxiety scores were due to social relief funds (2.88±8.61, p=0.046) and employment status (1.13±8.39, p=0.012) during and after the COVID-19. Living alone as a migrant, having health fears and job status were significant factors linked to depression during COVID-19 while lower monthly income, absence of social relief funds, job loss, and contracting COVID-19 were the risk factors for anxiety during COVID-19. Living alone, poor health status, and not receiving social relief funds were the factors associated with depression after the pandemic whereas not receiving social relief funds was the only risk factor for anxiety after COVID-19.

    Conclusion: To alleviate depression and anxiety among migrants, it is imperative to prioritize the expansion of access to social relief funds, ensure employment stability, and implement regular and thorough health check-up services.
