The purpose of this study was to prepare the social welfare services that can be provide for adolescents with school violence problem, by examining the effects of their interpersonal experience on school violence. The subjects of this study were 387 first and second grade students(216 boys and 171 girls) chosen from a junior middle school. An investigation was made into how students who have school violence experience were different from students who haven't, and how differences in interpersonal experience affect school violence experience.
The findings of this study were as followings.
First, students who have school violence experience revealed that they had been exposed to verbal violence and physical violence from their parents at n home. In addition, they had experienced violence from their teachers during classroom instruction. They had even felt as though they were receiving insufficient support from their peers, and that, in fact, they had taken much more serious wrongdoing from their friend's.
Second, a common theme among students who have experienced school violence seems to be an atmosphere of too much control and reject at home with violence occurring frequently. In addition, support from their teachers and friends was found to be insufficient.
Third, students who suffered from the experience of school violence were affected by their parents' verbal violence. A student's relationship with his or her parents is a deciding factor in their development at school. Parents' indifference is an important factor in patterns of violent experiences.
Fourth, experience with teachers did not provide an alternative effect to students who suffered from school violence. These students were also affected by their teachers' violent educative instruction.
Fifth, among relationships with friends, students who suffered from school violence appeared to have received the highest amount of damage either directly from friends or from a lack of their support. And it has been revealed that experience with school violence becomes more and more frequent as wrong-doings from their peers increase.
Sixth, experience with violent teaching methods, violence in the home, and mistreatment from peers are closely related.
Finally, it is their friends that have the most influence, rather than teachers or parents, on an adolescent's experience with school violence. If we observe a student's friends' conduct, than we can know more about the personality of the student.
On the basis of this result, strategies for prevention and intervention can be suggested to school social welfare services. First, school social workers should work on creating a more cooperative environment between teacher, student and parent, fostering more discussion between parent and child, and offering advice to parents on how to bolster their child's self esteem and independent thought.
Second, school social workers should act to reform the school system and school rules. For instance, to prohibit physical punishment from teachers and to establish a firm and clear set of school rules concerning violence.
Third, school social workers should offer opportunities that can increase the quality of an adolescent's experiences with personal relationships, as well as create support systems that can help them.
Besides, adolescents' school violence problems can not be successfully prevented by focussing in on family and school alone. School social workers must take the time to solve and prevent the occurrence of school violence among adolescents and must link student, family, school and local community. Therefore, an important task for the future is to study so as to know how to form, and how to intervene on forming local community networks in a more effective and desirable way.
