The purpose of this study is to explore how the problem of loss of shantytown places due to urban redevelopment has an existential effect on the lives and identity of residents. To this end, by taking 104 Village located in Nowon-gu, Seoul as an example, how residents who have experienced redevelopment have experienced and made meaningful residential spaces was analyzed from the perspective of hermeneutic phenomenology. 104 Village was an administratively informal residence, but it is an urban panel village where the same residents lived for a long time and accumulated life history, network, and community practice, and is an area where complete demolition and external migration took place through redevelopment. Participants in this study consisted of 7 residents who had lived in the area for at least 19 years before redevelopment and experienced migration during the redevelopment process.
As a research method, in-depth interviews were conducted by applying Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology, and life experiences were narrative reconstructed based on the statements of residents. The analysis was conducted using four existential categories: physicality, spatiality, temporality, and lived relationship as analysis lenses.
As a result of the study, first, in terms of physicality, residents remembered the poor residential environment of shantytown as embodied experiences through physical senses such as cold, moisture, and unstable structures, and these senses were found to have affected shame, atrophy, and even the formation of residential standards. Second, in terms of spatiality, it was simultaneously revealed that the residential space, which had been the base of life for a long time, lost its meaning as a result of redevelopment, or, on the contrary, tried to maintain it as a place through memory and attachment. Third, in terms of time, it was confirmed that the redevelopment experience was not a cut-off event, but was integrated as a part of life in the process of repeated recollection and reinterpretation over time. Fourth, in terms of otherness, the experience of dissolving neighboring relations and communities during the redevelopment process was remarkable, and even in the midst of conflict and distrust, some residents made efforts to maintain relational bonds or reorganize them anew.
These results show that urban redevelopment is not just a matter of improving the physical environment or relocating housing, but a process of existential transformation in which the continuity, identity, relationships, and memories of residents' lives are reconstructed. By understanding redevelopment as a change in place experience rather than a change in space, this study raises the need to actively consider the experiences and places of residents in residential welfare and urban redevelopment discussions.
