Using proper idiomatic expressions are an important part of smooth communication. Idiomatic expressions are also common in other languages, and they are formed within the language that shares the same historical tradition or cultural background of the society in which the language is used. Therefore idiomatic expression is familiar to the members of the same language community, but it is very difficult to acquire the knowledge of other language societies.
In this paper, to enhance Chinese learners' communication skills in daily life, we extract the elements of Korean culture inherent in Korean idiomatic expressions and reveal the value of idiomatic expressions as educational materials. In addition, we examined how to use cultural elements inherent in korean idiomatic expression so as to enhance its learning. Based on this, it is suggested that idiomatic expression teaching method for Chinese learners is supplemented by teaching proper idiomatic expression where learners are aimed to improve their way of expressing Korean idiomatic expressions.
The contents of the discussion are as follows.
First of all, it is necessary to select a list of Korean expressions in order to present education methods for learning practical Korean expressions. Following which, in the step of selecting the list of Korean idiomatic expressions for practical education, the emphasis was on selecting Korean idiomatic expressions, which are widely and commonly used by Koreans. Since learners main goal is to have a smooth communication with Koreans, it is reasonable to select the list based on the highest frequency of use by Koreans. Therefore, in this paper, the data showing the frequency of use of Korean idiomatic expressions were collected, and through the idiomatic expressions contained in them, the list of idiomatic expressions was defined.
The next step is the classification of the educational grade for the list of idiomatic expressions selected in the previous step. This is done so, because teaching the Chinese learners about the idiomatic expression grade wise first appears to be more effective than suggesting ways to express the idiomatic expressions. In this study, Chinese learners were classified into stages of Korean idiomatic expressions by comparing Chinese idiomatic expressions with Korean idiomatic expressions.
In this paper, we analyze the culture elements inherent in idiomatic expressions in order to develop teaching methods for Korean idiomatic expressions using Korean - Chinese culture understanding.
Prior to that, cultural categories reflected in idiomatic expressions were presented by analyzing cultural elements, similarities and differences between Korea and China with examples of Korean idiomatic expressions related to classified cultural themes. Finally, a concrete educational method of expressions of Korean idiomatic expression was presented. In this paper, a teaching method of expressing Korean idiomatic expression based on the analysis of cultural elements mainly in order to provide education methods that utilize cultural understanding is proposed. In this paper, an intermediate and an advanced level teaching plan was made while clearly showing the difference between Korea and China.
Although much research has been done on idiomatic expressions so far, research on education through inherent cultural understanding has been insufficient. Considering that the ultimate purpose of foreign language learning is to improve communication ability, Pure academic research on idiomatic expression is important, but it is also equally important to study the idiomatic expression from a cultural point of view. This will help Chinese learners to learn how to use more idiomatic expressions. In this regard, it seems to be an excellent tool for students to understand Korean culture in various ways. In addition, I expect to make a great contribution to the improvement of communication ability which is the ultimate aim of Korean language learning.
