The 21st century is an era of digital economy and at the same
time, it is an era to weigh cultural industry, that is, national
competitiveness. Though fine art has been affecting many of our
advanced living environment, such as not only design, living art,
artistic products but also architecture and city landscape, it is
suffering from incapability of communication due to the cut-down
and cut-off of trade caused by the long-term economy depression.
In this situation, the digital economy and digital revolution that
attacked the whole world and our cultural art require new change in
our art market. Now, the necessity for new distribution structure is
strongly raised for the general public to enjoy and purchase artistic
works through mutual communication beyond the limit of time and
space for which the closed and shady habitual trade practice of the
art market that has been led by some opulent people should be
overcome.
In 1999, Sothebys, the worldwide leading auction company for
artistic works, has opened an internet auction site. With the on & off
line going on side by side, the real internet auction for artistic works has started and this internet auction trend influenced on not only
world art market but also on the Korean market.
As of April, 2001, there are some internet auction sites for fine
art such as 'auctionart.com', 'myarte.com', 'auctionhouse.co.kr',
'helloart.com', 'cmgallery.com' and another auction sites for cultural
art collection such as 'kobay.co.kr', ‘auc25.com', and general portal
sites such as 'yahoo.co.kr'. In case of the auction sites specialized in
artistic works only, many of them suffering from the threat on their
continuation for several reasons such as finance and lack of ability.
This thesis analyzes international and national internet auction sites
for artistic works through the basic factors of traditional marketing
and internet marketing, 4P(Product, Price, Promotion, Place) and 4C
(Contents, Communication, Community, Commerce) and the question,
"Does internet auction site for artistic works have any possibility of
existence in Korean art market". It also brings to the attention the
problems that Korean internet auction sites for artistic works have
and some alternative measures for improvement based on the 4P and
4C.
According to the study result, we reached the conclusion that
Korean internet auction sites, compared with those of advanced
foreign internet auction sites, have quite closed distribution structure
and price decision method, that their poor contents weakened
formation of community and that it causes lack of major business and
immatured on-line operation system.
While checking through internet auction sites for artistic works, this
thesis seeks for some detailed alternative measures. But until now, it
is very difficult to find any study examples in this area and even a
detailed discussion on the possibility of success hasn't been made yet. Besides, there wasn't any thesis on this subject, which made the
study more difficult. Though openness and mutual communication is
one of the features of internet, Korean sites haven't performed this
basic feature yet and they having denied to open their internal
operating situation, the study research had much difficulty. Without
producing any good alternative measures, I agree that there are still
lots of matters to be studied. I hope that more active study and
discussions are made to promote the development of internet auction
for artistic works to expand the art market and improve distribution
structure.
