Lee Sang, Kim Gi-rim, Park Tae-won are the major writers in 1930's Korean Literature. They represent at least one thing in common: City.
Kim and Park experienced Tokyo as a foreign student. They are deeply affected by Tokyo; their literary taste and attitude are shaped by that modern metropolis in the Far East. For example, Kim's pose as yokel assumes his taste for Tokyo the metropolis; Park also feels confined in Seoul of the colonial period. Therefore, their sense of city is relatively realistic.
Similarly, Lee regards himself as an ultramodern urban personality. For Lee, city is his originary and aesthetic home. In fact, his writings are more urban and urbane than any other writers' at that time. These three writers represent the urban, and, in that way, suggest their attitude toward the modern; 'city' is the condensation of the modern, as well as the expression of the modernity problematic itself
Lee's 'Wings' shows the peculiarity of the modern city in Korea (that is, Seoul) in a symbolic way, surpassing other stories whose urban background is geographically specified. Its background is conceptual, divided into City of Light and City of Darkness, bright and seamy sides of all the modern city. In addition, the space is a kind of index; the construct of no. 33 (address of narrator) is homologous with that of the city. This space is open to everyone, and no one knows who is in-and-out or who lives within. Particularly, the sexual connotation of the 'gate' connects openness of space and sexual pleasure of men. In a word, the text summarizes the contemporary city-structure and cultural logic through its spatial background.
Among Lee's writings, the most urban taste is expressed in 'Country Travel.' In this text, both nature and rural scenary are mediated by the city-image; the writer is too immersed in the urban taste to describe nature without referring to city. Moreover, his view of country is dominated by the city vs. country opposition; he pictures the country as lack (of civilization).
In 1930's wrings, department stores often appear on the stage. By then, department store had already been closely related to the masses' routine; it is one of the central elements of urban culture. The significance of department store: The modern gaze of the masses is disciplined by it. Department store is not only the boiling space of desire to buy and sell, but also the training school which drills the modern system of gaze, that is, the modern ways of seeing. One needs that gaze in order to live the urban life.
Kim is the observer of the urban culture, and naturally interested in department stores. Department stores in Kim's writings manifest themselves as everyday's unconscious desire inherent in modernity itself. They are one preempted form of happy future composed of material abundance. In this se of commodity, symbolized is the most optimistic vision and the most anti-pastoral despair of modernity at the same time. In the splendid show windows, displayed are exotic manikins luring consumers to desire. In a department store, you can see the masses possessed by desire to consume, feeling the texture of eroticism, but it is nothing but the 'deteriorated' face of modernity itself.
Kim understands the department store short and clear; it condenses the consumer culture of the modern civilization, throwing a net of phantasmagoric desire only to catch the masses. His attitude toward it, however, is quite ambiguous, for he cannot escape that fishing net himself.
It's regrettable that Kim's gaze stops at the appearance of department store. Interested only in show-window commodities and shallowness of civilization, he does not consider the relationship among the department store, the urban culture, and the nature of the modern. In a word, he disregards the fact that the show window is the center of discipline of system of gaze, which is, in turn, the center of the modern life.
His interest in the crowding consumers is superficial, too. He describes them as 'a shoal of fish', with the department store as a fish-luring light. He is, however, not aware of the reason why the department store lures the masses of people, ignorant that they construct their perception, meaning, and attitude through experiencing that space. Explaining the relationship between department store and consumer as no more than inadequate phantasy, he cannot grasp the other side of it. That is, he does not perceive that phantasy is the obverse of lack, or some symptom of the problematic reality.
On the other hand, Park's interest lies in the motif of fla`neur. One of the most essential themes concerning the flarneur is its relationship to the masses. The fla`neur takes an ambivalent attitude toward the masses; he is fascinated by them because of their urban mobility, intensity, and vitality, while terrified at them for fear that their energy should destruct his own individual ego-contour. So is Park's attitude.
However, the masses seen by the fla`neur in Park's writings is generally the negative entity, for the gaze of fla`neur excludes the dynamic possibility of the masses. Of course, it results from the fact that he makes the pose of observer. The masses, the street, or the city is not something read 'from outside' like books; reader is already within it to interact. That is, the city is something observed 'from inside'. In addition, the fla`neur is not the owner of the privileged gaze; it is one of the elements of the city just like the masses. fla`neur, the gazing subject and gazed object at the same time, exists at the intermediate conjuncture of 'seeing-seen'.
However, the fla`neur in Park's writings is always 'seeing subject'; Park ignores the fact that the fla`neur himself is 'seen' as one element of the city. Figuratively speaking, the city (viz. the masses, or the street) is a kind of proscenium, with the fla`neur as its audience. He disregards the fact that the fla`neur is audience and player at the same time. Although his fla`neur is sorts of reflective subject and contemplates the city, his reflection is always one-sided. Therefore, the authentic reflection on the object is barely accomplished.
