In this study, the researcher examines 'layered structure of quilts' and investigates 'the spirit of quilts' that was formed during the process. Specifically, the researcher examines how an increase or a decrease in layer is expressed in quilts as a layered structure is kept and added, as well as changes in shape and texture on the surface of quilts. The researcher's works of quilts are examined from various perspectives based on theoretical review and case studies of other artists.
First, as a background to the study, the researcher examines the structure of layer and the spirit. The researcher investigates basic structure and characteristics of traditional quilts, and discuss various roles of 'layer' as a skin, as a building, and as an environment that surrounds us. The researcher shows that the structure of a skin that has a function of protecting us from the external environment also has a psychological role in forming a relationship. In architecture, it is found that exposing the structure of a building on the exterior could be one way of expression, and that the process of stacking small objects to form a structure is relevant to quilting for its decorative elements. In the researcher's works of quilt, layers of fabric are sewn together and then cut off layer by layer, leading to gradual augmentation as layers of fabric are structurally stacked and removed, filled and emptied. The expression of layer that forms the hierarchical structure of the environment that surrounds us can be related to the principle of trilateral unison (samhap) in the Oriental philosophy, which means that three elements should come together to maintain structural stability. The researcher quotes a film 'American Quilt' to show how quilts can appeal to people and understand the spirit of quilts. Pieces of quilt represent a person's life with love, happiness, pain and unhappiness, and they should be carefully sewn together for harmony even though there is no clear rule. The ambivalent nature of quilts found in the relationship among needle work, fabric, needle and thread develops into naturalness and a way of communication as the work of quilt is made, and the ambivalence is altered to purification. Based on this discussion on 'layer' and the spirit of quilts, the researcher's works of quilt are examined that have multiple layers that serve as a structure, and show that the layers help to form a relationship like a skin, facilitate communication, and enable purification of ambivalent feelings, going beyond its role as a boundary between the outside and the inside.
The researcher also conducts case studies of other artists. Michael James combined quilt and technology to express layers, Hundertwasser introduced the theory of five skins, and practiced it in architecture and various other works of art throughout his life, and Kim Taeho overlays several layers of paint on a canvas and scraps them off with a chisel to fill the canvas with grid-like structures, creating a rhythm of life through augmented space of proliferation. Works in these case studies are compared to the researcher's variety of expressions, layered structure and augmented space of proliferation.
In the researcher's works of quilt, structured layers are final outcomes, but the process of creating them is a journey of discovering oneself and finding self-identity in life in terms of 'the present and my location' and 'actions and thoughts.' In this process, each work of art produces unique layers, and combined together, the structure and form develop into intangible 'spirit of quilts.‘
'Layer as accumulating' starts from expression of desire, and the self is expressed in objet of furniture, forming a grid structure. Second, furniture represents an isolated self, and as it reveals its will to dismantle covered layers to escape from the room toward the outside, the meaning of layer changes to the 'layer as emptying.' The cross-section of layered structure that is made in the process of piling and then removing layers of fabric is replaced with the meaning of emptiness. Third, the 'layer as dissolution and proliferation' is a stage of making the layered structure visible by repeating the process of emptying out through dismantling. To empty out layers made from piled layers of fabric, they are cut with a pair of scissors. As time passes, fabric becomes naturally frayed at the edge, and the frayed threads are intertwined again to create a new grain, and this stands for 'dismantling' and 'emptying out' in our life.
To the researcher, quilting is a journey to self-discovery through the use of fabric, needle and sawing machine. The quilting activity is enjoyable and entertaining, and it is a channel for feeling free and ecstatic even when the work is hard and demanding. It brings realization that the researcher is leading a feminine life—compared to impersonal life as an individual—socially, and expressing oneself in work of quilts brings out the feeling of beauty, sense of ownership and leads to expansion of relationships to let people around me live more comfortable and happier life. Quilting is more than a mere repetition of following traditional, geometric patterns, and develops into the world of art where people discover and express themselves. Going further beyond self-expression, self-understanding, and self-communication, work of quilts spills into the social realm and eventually to the world of infinity, to the spirit of quilt to complete oneself.
