Fiber art has been expanded to fine art rather than limiting itself to weaving crafts after Bauhaus’s experiment on finding new forms and extension of materials. The variation of the traditional method and the technical development were also the reasons for this but the introduction of new materials was the biggest driving force to a drastic change in fiber art. These new materials in contemporary fiber art have been mostly industrial materials such as plastic, rubber, metal and glass, which allowed fiber art to deviate from a surface and also present in a three dimensional form. Although fiber art have an influence on contemporary fine art, the position of fiber art has been vague in the traditional term of art, divided into painting, sculpture and architecture, so that it just becomes one of the kinds depending on how it is suggested. Thus, the researcher examines the features of visual perception in a fiber artwork, especially made with transparent material, as reconsideration of the identity of contemporary fiber art, and studies what meanings are derived from these features. Firstly, how a new material is introduced in contemporary fiber art and how the concept of a space is extended from the introduction of a new material are examined to process the study. Diverse kinds of new materials have brought interesting effects with unique gloss and textures, and led the conceptual development, connoting three-dimensional space and time in three-dimensional works. Also, how the transparent material, used in the researcher’s work, is manifested as a meaning of ‘Kinetic Energy’ in contemporary art is analyzed with its relationship with ‘Kinetic Art’. Secondly, based on the analysis made earlier, the types of the ‘Kinetic Energy’ structure, presented in contemporary fiber art, are studied in two kinds of perspectives: the visual and perceptual motility, recognized by properties of light and materials, and the life force, created by the repetition and multiplication of forms. The visual and perceptual mobility is easily triggered because light materials move easily as they are, and transparent or glittering materials often give visual instability to observers with a feeling of lightness. Also, how the situation that a certain unit is repeated like in the crochet technique can be understood as the multiplication in a living organism tells that it is an appropriate method of expressing ‘Kinetic Energy’ of a living organism. Thirdly, Lenore Tawney (1907-2007) and Kay Sekimachi (1926-) are chosen as reference artists and examined to see how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is presented in their works. The works of Lenore Tawney show ‘Kinetic Energy’ by making soft light through the unwoven thread and hanging her works in the air. The works of Kay Sekimachi visualizes ‘Kinetic Energy’ by expressing silence, lightness and flexibility through the complicate structure and understated colors of transparent nylon monofilament yarns. Lastly, the subject of this dissertation, how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is visualized as the semantic structure, is examined by analyzing the researcher’s works based on what the contents has examined earlier. The suggested works are divided into four different characteristics: ‘the soft geometry type from the effect of light’ occurring from the relationship of multilayered nylon monofilament crocheted fabrics and light, ‘the effect of the cellular structure from the crochet technique’ implying that crochet has the similar tendency with the growth of a cell and a living organism’s complicated forms, ‘the transformation and multiplication of organic structures’ suggesting that a multiplicative and variable crochet work has the similar characteristic with the feature of an organism, and how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is examined from the psychological perspective by hanging a work in the air, ‘the rising and floating in the form of a mobile’. This dissertation seeks for a possibility of expression that can be achieved only by fiber art among various forms of contemporary art through this series of the researcher’s analyses.

Art aims to express beauty and deliver an artist’s message. The researcher studies on the beauty of nature and tries to express feelings of everyday life existing in nature through the researcher’s practice. The flow in nature repeatedly goes through the process of expanding, downscaling and transforming and the researcher’s practice captures moments of these processes. The organic flows of nature such as a wave, wind and cloud are visualized by simplifying into lines and they are rearranged into straight lines that can connect dots in the shortest distance. The mosaic technique that can structurally arrange sponge blocks is used to study on formativeness. The researcher shows dynamic forms of the flows in the researcher’s practice by fixing them in lines. While capturing moments, the researcher uses a black color to represent lightweight, meaning emptiness, and death, and cuts sponges in the same size in order to focus on a form of the final work. Moreover, the suitability of the researcher’s main material, a sponge, is on its characteristic, porosity, so that flexibility of nature and the harmony of artificial and natural objects are presented. The mosaic technique enables to express formativeness in semantic, behavioral and effectual aspects. At first, in the semantic aspect, the principles of a form, a dot, line and surface, are used as a base, and secondly, the actions of cutting, trimming and gluing sponges represent the human behaviors that disband and rearrange nature. Also, the flows of nature can be newly created and have distortion and optical illusion depending on the researcher’s intention rather than the fixed forms. Through this study, the researcher wants to establish own perspective in art by bringing out the organic flows of nature into an image of an artificial form, a cube. Moreover, the researcher expects this research to play a role in the development of creative art by suggesting diverseness of materials for textile art with the use of an industrial product, a sponge, and to give an opportunity to be interested in nature around people’s daily life like a little pixel of a cube can be only observed when looked carefully.

A visual system has embraced numerous changes such as microscopic or photographic technology through the development of mass media, science and technology. These changes have had a direct impact on the art especially media art as well as painting and sculpture from the 20th century. For example, the exterior of the artwork can be expressed as the module image like pixels and the micro-forms in biology, astronomy, medicine and etc. can be applied to the artwork. This study considers the image of cell proliferation as the motive and incorporates the felt as the material of choice. Centering on the author’s proliferation form artworks, this study describes the felt material in detail and explains about the proliferation forms of similar objects described in fiber arts along with the rapidly evolving media age. In order to look at the artworks more objectively, Kohei Nawa who shows the installation works of extension and proliferation in the form of pixels and Marjolein Dallinga who displays the space installation works using felt are chosen as the sample artists. Kohei has been exhibiting installation works that show the infinitely proliferating forms in Civilization and information society through cell division and proliferation as the motive. Marjolein uses the felt material and shows installation works in the space with intuitively uncertain factors. An analysis of the previous studies helps the author to find the similarities in the author’s artworks and confirms the possibility of using the cellular proliferation forms in fiber arts. The author explains the reason why the felt was chosen and the ways in which the artworks were produced. In addition, the study also describes how the biological forms are grafted into the author’s artworks from a microscopic point of view. The artworks are expressed by focusing on cell proliferation and formativeness. The series of Fiber Cell, the interactive design that fuses the biologically proliferating cellular forms and the technology, Cell cloning, the works that are inspired by the proliferation forms found in the petri dish and etc. are categorized. The forms and the processes are also described.

      RANK : 247599

In this study, the researcher examines 'layered structure of quilts' and investigates 'the spirit of quilts' that was formed during the process. Specifically, the researcher examines how an increase or a decrease in layer is expressed in quilts as a layered structure is kept and added, as well as changes in shape and texture on the surface of quilts. The researcher's works of quilts are examined from various perspectives based on theoretical review and case studies of other artists. First, as a background to the study, the researcher examines the structure of layer and the spirit. The researcher investigates basic structure and characteristics of traditional quilts, and discuss various roles of 'layer' as a skin, as a building, and as an environment that surrounds us. The researcher shows that the structure of a skin that has a function of protecting us from the external environment also has a psychological role in forming a relationship. In architecture, it is found that exposing the structure of a building on the exterior could be one way of expression, and that the process of stacking small objects to form a structure is relevant to quilting for its decorative elements. In the researcher's works of quilt, layers of fabric are sewn together and then cut off layer by layer, leading to gradual augmentation as layers of fabric are structurally stacked and removed, filled and emptied. The expression of layer that forms the hierarchical structure of the environment that surrounds us can be related to the principle of trilateral unison (samhap) in the Oriental philosophy, which means that three elements should come together to maintain structural stability. The researcher quotes a film 'American Quilt' to show how quilts can appeal to people and understand the spirit of quilts. Pieces of quilt represent a person's life with love, happiness, pain and unhappiness, and they should be carefully sewn together for harmony even though there is no clear rule. The ambivalent nature of quilts found in the relationship among needle work, fabric, needle and thread develops into naturalness and a way of communication as the work of quilt is made, and the ambivalence is altered to purification. Based on this discussion on 'layer' and the spirit of quilts, the researcher's works of quilt are examined that have multiple layers that serve as a structure, and show that the layers help to form a relationship like a skin, facilitate communication, and enable purification of ambivalent feelings, going beyond its role as a boundary between the outside and the inside. The researcher also conducts case studies of other artists. Michael James combined quilt and technology to express layers, Hundertwasser introduced the theory of five skins, and practiced it in architecture and various other works of art throughout his life, and Kim Taeho overlays several layers of paint on a canvas and scraps them off with a chisel to fill the canvas with grid-like structures, creating a rhythm of life through augmented space of proliferation. Works in these case studies are compared to the researcher's variety of expressions, layered structure and augmented space of proliferation. In the researcher's works of quilt, structured layers are final outcomes, but the process of creating them is a journey of discovering oneself and finding self-identity in life in terms of 'the present and my location' and 'actions and thoughts.' In this process, each work of art produces unique layers, and combined together, the structure and form develop into intangible 'spirit of quilts.‘ 'Layer as accumulating' starts from expression of desire, and the self is expressed in objet of furniture, forming a grid structure. Second, furniture represents an isolated self, and as it reveals its will to dismantle covered layers to escape from the room toward the outside, the meaning of layer changes to the 'layer as emptying.' The cross-section of layered structure that is made in the process of piling and then removing layers of fabric is replaced with the meaning of emptiness. Third, the 'layer as dissolution and proliferation' is a stage of making the layered structure visible by repeating the process of emptying out through dismantling. To empty out layers made from piled layers of fabric, they are cut with a pair of scissors. As time passes, fabric becomes naturally frayed at the edge, and the frayed threads are intertwined again to create a new grain, and this stands for 'dismantling' and 'emptying out' in our life. To the researcher, quilting is a journey to self-discovery through the use of fabric, needle and sawing machine. The quilting activity is enjoyable and entertaining, and it is a channel for feeling free and ecstatic even when the work is hard and demanding. It brings realization that the researcher is leading a feminine life—compared to impersonal life as an individual—socially, and expressing oneself in work of quilts brings out the feeling of beauty, sense of ownership and leads to expansion of relationships to let people around me live more comfortable and happier life. Quilting is more than a mere repetition of following traditional, geometric patterns, and develops into the world of art where people discover and express themselves. Going further beyond self-expression, self-understanding, and self-communication, work of quilts spills into the social realm and eventually to the world of infinity, to the spirit of quilt to complete oneself.

The objective of this research is to analyze the artworks based on the state of mind inherent in the material characteristics of Hanji, traditional Korean paper, along with a spiritual background of Buddhist’s middle-way philosophy, and then to propose the extension of source materials and presentation techniques of Hanji. The progression of paper-making skills in Korea had a strong relationship with the propagation of Buddhism. Temples had the ability to produce Hanji for the purpose of Buddhist Scriptures dissemination. Hanji being used as a primary material for recording has been manufactured using various names, depending on the source of raw materials, colors, thickness, luster, usages, places of origin, and so on, combined with the wisdom of those who made Hanji and those who used it. More recently, as the interest in natural materials has increased, Hanji has emerged in a wide variety of applications. First, based on the history of Hanji and the manufacturing processes, the state of mind inherent in Hanji and its spiritual connection to the Buddhist’s middle-way philosophy are examined. In order to understand the natural materials employed in traditional Hanji, various Hanji artifacts and handicrafts are classified according to the materials involved, and their characteristics are investigated. Hanji has been regarded as a material that reflects the lives in the natural environment, history, and culture of the Korean Peninsula, and its internal characteristics are intimately related with our lives. Moreover, it turns out that Hanji is spiritually connected to the Buddhist’s middle-way philosophy residing in the author’s mind. It is also confirmed that the natural materials such as lacquer, raw material for natural dyes, oil, and beeswax used in Hanji not only have enhanced its durability, but also have provided additional functions according to the characteristics of each material. Second, the world of artworks of Ham Sup and Han Kijoo is particularly chosen for the study, and carefully examined due to the fact that they have used Hanji since the 1980s in recognizing it as a formative material encapsulating Koreans’ sensibility. Ham Sup perceived Hanji as "a feeling of stability and mildness obtained when embracing the viewer's eye," and has largely expressed the extroverted tendency contained in Koreans’ emotional temperament in his artworks. On the other hand, Han Kijoo considered Hanji to be "a feeling of cozy warmth that holds tastes of life and a material that treats one’s wound," and has largely exploited the introverted tendency residing in Koreans’ emotional frame of mind. Third, by reflecting the theoretical backgrounds and studies on the artworks of the sampled artists, the author’s own artworks are presented. The expression methods and skills utilizing the natural materials are proposed. Hanji is recognized as a material for warmth, calmness, comfort, relaxation, and complete regeneration, particularly for people like the author who regards life as a long process of practice, self-reflection, and enlightenment obtained by sympathizing and sharing healing experiences. The author has experienced self-reflection through concentration and repetition in the process of producing the artworks, and felt sympathy and healing emotion when communicating with the inner world of the spirits inherent in Hanji. This study suggests the usage of natural materials such as Ottchil, Korean lacquer, raw material for natural dyes, and beeswax for enhancing the durability of Hanji. The utilization methods of Hanji are extended by applying an Ottchil technique in Hanji, a dyeing skill using the iron corrosion and an Encaustic technique using beeswax. In this study, Hanji is verified to be an appropriate formative material for expressing the spirits of Koreans through a sequence of investigations of Hanji materials, artworks of those who work with Hanji and the author’s artworks of the author. The modern methodology for utilizing the natural materials and their presentation skills are proposed. This study is an example of the healthy self-discovery in search of the way of self-practices while working on a artwork. The possible expansion of expression materials and utilization techniques are investigated for the sake of those artists who are using Hanji as a formative material.

Computer technology has become a necessity for any area in a diverse and complex modern society today. Many attempts have been made in the literature of designs and arts to recreate the traditional method of expression, and Digilog Art is holding its place with the help of computer technology, such as Internet, digital printing, and digital camera. Digilog Art is capable of simultaneously expressing pure pictorialization as well as digital art like textile designs and graphic designs by using the tools of computers, tablets, digital cameras, and scanners instead of by using the traditional methods of brushes, colors, and objects. This is mainly aiming at enhancing its commercial, practical, and artistic value. Images of a world-map used as a main motif of research works were partially taken from a globe, a mercator chart, and a world map. The image of a globe is preciously perceived as the only thing in this world to shape the fact that the human life is plain. Images on the mercator's charts have the meaning of self-examining ourselves with full of our own triumphs and tragedies in our daily lives. And they represent the fact that human beings, living like a little frog on this planet in the expansive universe, are marginal but priceless. In addition, they serve as a reminder of warning about modern society's materialism and its environmental pollution, including human's wasteful use of resources. Another case of works, using parts of a world map as their motif, shows the relationship between modern society's luxurious life and human's thoughts isn't wrong but different. Its method is firstly to make a lettering of its country names and legends shown in the world map, and secondly to complete the coloring works of expressing their height and depth tridimensionally. And then the analogic works are done with pictorial touch by using both brushes and knives on the canvas printed digitally. Some objects such as cubics, spangles, and optical fibers are added to express a brilliant light and modern materialism, including human's up and down. After completing the work in this way, noctilucent paints are added to show another one hidden in the work, which is intended to let the painter's inner image shown to the audience by painting with luminous painting materials. It takes great and delicate skills to paint with luminous paints. Since most of the painting works are invisible, they are mainly depending on only the painter's sense. This way the inner world that the researcher wishes to express is shaped as the mysterious and endless depth as well as splendid light. This study aims to show the potentiality of Digilog Art and its promising prospective by expressing with the experiment of the hybrid works of digital printing and analogical technology.

The everyday phenomena that are repeated around human beings reflect how things look like in contemporary society. This researcher connected people's daily life and the urban environment with everydayness and looked into what would people look like. The photographed images include the accumulated time and have a new time and space through the artist’s collage work. The audience accepts a new area of communication that re-recognizes the space on the artwork as a single space and time. In this work, the objects of everyday life express the time setting and spatial background as they are. It reflects modernity, not a life that is merely being repeated. It was also confirmed that the work provides a real world which can be often seen in his or her own experience. First, this study looked into the types of people's lives today through the examination of the everydayness of contemporary society. Based on the sociologist Henri Lefebvre’s everydayness, it was confirmed that popular culture has continuity, established through repeated daily routines, and time settings. The objects shown in the work show everydayness and, at the same time, have modernity to understand contemporary society. Second, everyday life is the basis of life that maintains and sustains society and individuals. Individuals belong to and communicate in various relationships. In the researcher's work, characters in daily life have a connection point that the audiences can put themselves in the characters’ shoe via a common background called life, and these characteristics could be related to the nature of daily interaction. Gestures are used by humans to emphasize expressions or to substitute particular words. They are a form that uses the body to perform the language function, the most basic function in communication. This is called an utterance of gesture, and it was confirmed that the form of the gesture used in form in the work was based on the gesture for communication. Third, based on the research above, the researcher made a photo collage using images that were recorded with the focus on the social communication of the surrounding environment and everyday life. As for the materials and techniques of the work, it is in the form of stitches which used a thread. It expresses the flow of time through the flow of the line, and because a thread is an object made of the line, the similarity could be demonstrated. The collage form of the work captured the moment by using a camera and underwent the process of combination and reconstruction in the form of selecting and using digital image files. It reproduces the everyday image of the outside world using a camera to make communication between the artist and the audience possible via the artwork, and come to have new texture by utilizing the properties of the fiber and adding handwork. It is expected that this study would tear down the boundaries of each genre in art and, by extension, explore new possibilities of fiber art.

Works produced by researchers are products about strangeness of unfamiliar things occurred by inconsistency between conventional understanding of forms and materials. Actual size and visual images from objects was similarly represented in terms of actual size and visual images. On the contrary, emotional materials were utilized in terms of physical properties. By producing and reinterpreting objects in mass produced, cold, and solid physical properties as warm-hearted, soft, and emotional materials due to the technological innovation in modern society, they evoke surrealistic and synesthetic emotions because of original visual images and the inconsistency of reinterpreted touch information. People in turn appreciate works and actual objects from new perspective by breaking up conventional touch, weight, meaning, and emblems of objects. In this way, they focus on destroying conventional understanding, seeing life from updated perspectives, and further past situations and minds of researchers as well as people are healed. Modern art starts to deviate from the notion that emphasizes the past visual recognition and satisfies appreciators with visual, touch, auditory, olfactory senses. People are encouraged to terminate sense frames routinely accumulated in their memories and accept new synesthetic sense. Vision accepts information passively, yet recognizing information recognition through the sense of touch interacts actively so that they came to see daily life from new standpoint. The introduction of new synesthetic memory does not end with recognizing visual images of works. Instead, people watch their reminiscence and emotion spontaneously commingled with works by being aware of emotion and situation through five senses. The active access to objets through five senses not only composes mind, but enables you to have interests for communication by stimulating sympathy on others and their lives. “Memory tactility” refers to “experienced” “emotional” sense of touch through five senses and it was used as a major notion in this analysis. The author gave accounts on the difference between sense of touch and touch and further examined its characteristics in this study. “Memory sense of touch” in “material imagination” that refers to the elimination of restriction through Gaston Bachelard’s imagination and the expansion of the possibility of materials influenced over human beings in terms of physiology and psychology. This study will reconceptualize vision based on sense of touch, explore the definition of Luce Irigaray’s concept of the “sensible transcendental” who studied sense of touch as mediating sense, and study psychological effects of touch as cognitive sense based on research on visual reconceptualization. Moreover, it investigated the implication and concepts of objets symbolized by artistic intention through the modification of characters. Works are produced by converting memorable touch having solid physical properties into contrary soft textiles. The difference between remembered information and newly recognized information regenerates synesthetic memories. In the course of alteration and reawareness, works have a single emblem. This study and work represent textile art, which is an emotional art with which people feel and interact physically, by utilizing a tapestry technique that weaves natural textile materials such as wools and cottons one by one in order to express benignancy and coziness. Although a single thread has a color and texture, it is represented into textile art that retains various senses and emotions by commingling with other different threads. Just as various colors and textures create new physical properties, textile art is expected to expand the possibility of modern art as a communication channel where diverse thoughts and emotions are mixed and represented into new senses.

The modern society communicates with art and the approach to raise one's aesthetic sense and cultural awareness is embedded in our society. Unlike the past in which only functionality was stressed, it can widely be construed that human nature pursuing beauty is popularized through an expression called aesthetic sense. From a broad perspective, the change of values are promoted in our public lives and when viewed from a narrow perspective, in our individual lives which has brought about a change of lifestyle belonging to a cognitive medium called 'space', the essential base of our aesthetic instincts. The ‘wall’ is the most basic space component that divides the scope and decides the outside and inside of a space. The wall is a medium that realizes senses such as sight and touch from the space, and the morphological existence of the space’s visual perception. The wall has various value potentials. It plays a functional role called the space constitution, and works as the base that becomes the basics of the mind and body such as stabilization, harmony, health, and conducts functional and aesthetic expressions such as delivery, record, design, and color. In other words, the wall exists according to the environment and usage and in recent days, as cultural thinking heightens, it is being reborn as an existence called ‘Artwall’, a compound word of art and wall. In early 2000s when Artwalls started to be mentioned, it was expressed as a form of visual structure that focused on the color or motif in a plane structure with an artistic feeling. However, the figure of Artwall has developed into the three-dimensional form as a pivot of the architectural space and sculpture space recently. It implies that Artwalls are expanding from its original concept as part of a contemporary space and it absorbs and reflects the flow of the developing era as it is. In this study, the reflective material of the Artwall which is a complex medium of space art and life, formative constitution in the plane, three-dimensional form, sentimental motif, and visual perceptive space and change are considered. The ultimate purpose of art is to arouse the appreciator’s imagery. The material that becomes the background of the work plays an important role becoming the basic foundation in constituting the work in process. The reflective material bears the inherent property that directly reflects and projects everything visible. It is the most appropriate medium that can deliver the significance of the work the artist wants to convey without color. The Artwall consisting of the reflective materials is composed in a three-dimensional and plane way to arouse the new visual stimulus depending on the point of view. The appreciator experiences the visual perceptive optical illusion in the difference between reality and the space perceived from the reflected surface through the Artwall work. The space that was created by optical illusion causes the aesthetic motive to interpret the space newly from the appreciator, and attracts various imageries depending on the appreciator’s subjective environment. In addition, the expression technique such as the pattern and motif inside the optical illusion space provides a multi-dimensional and successive visual perceptive stimulus on the material and constitution form. In this study, the sample artists associated with the space change of the researcher’s work are selected and their works are analyzed to examine the characteristics and elements of the change in detail. American artist Alyson Shotz, who handles light and space by using a reflective material constitutes the projected or reflected phenomenon in a three-dimensional form to change the visual perceptive space. The visual perceptive space caused by the reflective material is expressed in a multidimensional way through the nature of the reflective material. Tricia Guild, called the queen of patterns and magician of color sublimates the simplicity in life into art by color contrast and the proper harmony of patterns. She applies flowers of drastic form and geometrical patterns into the design by using bold and strong colors. She makes a vivid effect in the multidimensional space by creating the atmosphere of the sentimental space while letting the appreciator have a visual experience. Finally, the meaning of a visual perceptive space of a reflective material Artwall is examined by analyzing the researcher’s work on the basis of the contents mentioned above. In regards to the researcher’s own reflective material techniques expressed in the work, the concept of the common space is defined in light of the reflective material. The optical illusion and space created by the reflective material is emphasized by constituting the overall atmosphere of work through expressions such as illusions or phantom. It is possible to define comprehensively that all of these are the images from a visual perceptive error and the combination of subjectively inherent images. Each imagery from the perspective of viewing the work is based on the nature of the material. The plane and three-dimensional constitution and arrangement, expression of sentimental motif, change and effect of the visual perceptive space follows the researcher’s intrinsic expression. This study interprets the change elements of the formation and sequence of the space based on the visual perceptive change through a reflective material. The significance as a general artwork and the meaning each work bears will be discussed by adding the researcher’s own expression to prove the ArtWall’s value and its development possibility.
