ABSTRACT
A criminal desistance study through work experience
of discharged juvenile deliquent
This study investigates how juvenile delinquents desist from offending through their working experience. Samples are six discharged juvenile delinquents who maintains a job at least three months without offending additional crime. They were selected by accessible intentional extraction and participated in the in-dept interview recording with their content. Interviews were implemented one to three times for each sample from December 2015 to April 2016. When needed, phone interviews were conducted for supplementation. Analysed data show 96 concepts, 41 minor categories and 19 categories in open coding. Main circumstance of desistance process through working experience appear that they stand on the edge of a precipice. Causal condition is being isolated for repeated delinquencies. Contextual condition is not escaping from fixed criminal habits, feeling desolated to stand alone, feeling tough to overcome social prejudice, being tied up by the expectation of rapid change, and not harmonizing with colleagues. Arbitrating condition is furnishing a stepping stone, realizing a new meaning of work, being protected by several layers of securities, stabilizing relationships with family and friends, and building bonds with good people. Action/reaction is endeavoring for harmonious relationship with colleagues, determining to stick to a pursuit, stepping forward to success, and tasting the benefits and pleasures of work. Result is entering a period of stable work, having an ownership of the life, and finding a new identity. Process analysis shows confusing standstill stage, imperious stand right stage, standing and preparing stage and building an identity of a desisted delinquent stage. Selected coding reveals the core category, 'being reborn from a dead-end to a new identity with hope,' and three types: coexisting with conflict, aggressive, coming-from-behind.
These results suggest the following: first, excessive expectation from others is a negative factor for desistance, and therefore proper expectation fit for individual situations is needed. Second, self-supporting will and pressure of male discharged delinquent are positive factors for desistance, so consultant should intervene investigationally into the view of a role and attitude. Third, the regular reward in work is a key factor to complementing drive control. Lastly, bonds with colleagues offer the practical example as a social resource.
