엄기원 동시 연구 = (A) study of Eom, gi-won's children's verses

Poet Eom, Gi-won has vigorously written new works until today, since he made his literary debut with children's verses in the 1960s. He has made lots of efforts to distribute children's literature. However, so far there has been little research on him. Therefore focusing on his children's verses, this study aimed at examining his works thoroughly.
After exploring the poet's life and the overall trend of his works, the study discussed structural characteristics of his poems through the poet speaker and the form of poem. In addition, it examined thematic characteristics of his poetry through the pattern of poetic meaning extension. Overall, the study comprehensively dealt with Mr. Eom's children's verses.
First, the poet's life can be divided into three stages. His childhood experience with nature and other social and historical experiences are well manifested in his children's verses. He spent 25 years teaching children. His 25-year teaching life is the most critical period for him in terms of the embodiment of children's minds. Since he quit teaching, he has continuously written new works that reveal his matured philosophical thoughts.
Next, the study examined structural characteristics of his poetry through the poet speaker and the form of poem. In Mr. Eom's poems, the adult speaker and the child speaker appear characteristically. As both speakers are close to the readers, the readers can easily read his poems. Mr. Eom has also written long verses and collaborative verses for children. The fact that he has written poems in various forms is well shows his willingness to write children's verses that are easily accessed by children. Especially, instructive tone of his long verses and collaborative verses for children well displays the poet's willingness and hope for children's bright future.
Lastly, the study examined the pattern of meaning extension of Mr. Eom's children's verses. His poetry often deals with nature. He has learned to respect life from nature and tried to express it in his poems. Besides, dismal historical events and social problems in modern society also appear in his poems. Such problematic reality is changed into positive images through children's minds. The poet also says community life can be a resolution for all such problems. The poet's exploration of nature and life, his perceptions of reality and community-oriented attitudes are considered as the processes of his philosophical thoughts he acquired in the 1970s. Such philosophical thoughts often appear as themes of his poetry.
In conclusion, the study found that Mr. Eom displayed childlike innocence and his philosophical thought in children's verses. In-depth understanding of children's minds and his love for children formed the basis of his poetry. Thus, his poems can touch both adults and children and he has been able to himself as the central figure in children's literature and literary circles.
The study examined Mr. Eom's works only through his children's verses. However, he has also published lots of creative fairy tales. Therefore, it is hoped that research will be conducted on his creative fairy tales, exploring his overall children's literature.
