빈곤과 가족구조 결손이 아동의 학교생활적응에 영향을 미치는 발달경로 = The Developmental Pathways from Poverty and Family Structure to School Adjustment of Elementary Schoolers

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to understand the developmental pathways from poverty and family structure to school adjustment; and ultimately to present practice guidelines to foster positive school adjustment in school-age children. This study analyzed the effects of poverty and family structure on school adjustment of elementary schoolers; and mediation effects by using supervisory parenting style, affectionate parenting style, exposure to entertainment-seeking media, self-resilience, and study habits as mediators, Data were obtained from the first wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2010 administered by National Youth Policy Institute. Subjects consist of 2,378 fourth graders in elementary schools. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. The result showed that poverty had a negative effect on supervisory and affectionate parenting styles. Family structure affected only supervisory parenting style. Poverty and family structure had an effect on exposure to entertainment-seeking media. In turn, parenting styles and exposure to entertainment-seeking media appeared to influence ego resiliency and study habits. Youth who experienced more ego resiliency and had better study habits showed more positive school adjustment. The direct effects of poverty and family structure on school adjustment were non-significant, which means that their effects were completely mediated. Based on this study, we suggest that the negative influences of poverty and family structure can be alleviated with clinical practices with a special emphasis on mediators.
