The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural relationships among instructor variables, student variables, class variables, and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation in the context of university classes. The research question established for this purpose was as follows: What are the structural relationships among instructor variables, student variables, class variables, and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation?
To address this research question, the direct and indirect effects were specified as follows. First, what is the direct effect of instructor variables on student variables? Second, what is the direct effect of instructor variables on class variables? Third, what is the direct effect of student variables on class variables? Fourth, what is the direct effect of class variables on the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation? Fifth, what is the indirect effect of instructor variables on the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation through the sequential mediation of student variables and class variables? Sixth, what is the indirect effect of instructor variables on the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation through the mediation of class variables? Seventh, what is the indirect effect of student variables on the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation through the mediation of class variables?
This study was conducted as survey research. The participants were students and graduates of four-year universities who had taken university classes and had experience participating in course evaluations. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping.
The results of this study were as follows. First, the research model established to explain the structural relationships among instructor variables, student variables, class variables, and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation was found to fit the data collected in this study. This indicates that the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation can be more appropriately explained within a structure in which instructor variables, student variables, and class variables are interconnected, rather than by the fragmented influence of a specific variable.
Second, instructor variables were found to have a significant direct effect on student variables. This means that the more positively students perceived the overall characteristics of instructors in class situations, the more positively student variables such as self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning flow tended to appear.
Third, instructor variables were also found to have a significant direct effect on class variables. This shows that the more positively students perceived instructors, the more positively they tended to perceive class variables related to class planning, implementation, evaluation, satisfaction, and learning outcomes.
Fourth, student variables were found to have a significant direct effect on class variables. This means that students’ self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning flow are closely related to their perceptions of class processes and class outcomes.
Fifth, class variables were found to have a significant direct effect on the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation. This means that the more positively students perceived class variables, the more likely they were to perceive course evaluation items as appropriately reflecting their actual class experiences.
Sixth, a sequential mediating effect of student variables and class variables was found in the relationship between instructor variables and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation. This means that instructor characteristics perceived by students may be related to student variables such as self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning flow, and that these student variables may then be connected to class variables and further related to students’ perceptions of the appropriateness of course evaluation.
Seventh, a mediating effect of class variables was found in the relationship between instructor variables and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation. This means that instructor characteristics perceived by students may be related to the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation through how students perceive the processes and outcomes of classes, rather than being directly connected to the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation.
Eighth, a mediating effect of class variables was found in the relationship between student variables and the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation. This means that students’ self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning flow may be related to the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation through how students perceive and interpret classes, rather than being directly connected to the perceived appropriateness of course evaluation.
