The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of REBT group counseling program using role-play on children's ego-resilience. To this end, the following research problems were established.
Is the REBT group counseling program using role-play effective in improving children's ego-resilience?
To verify the above research problems, fifth graders of E Elementary school in Seoul conducted a preliminary examination of the ego-resilience. The researcher’s class was selected as an experimental group, and one other class with proven homogeneity was selected as a control group.
For four weeks, a total of 11 sessions of REBT group counseling program using role-play were conducted on the experimental group, and no treatment was given to the control group. After four weeks of the experiment, both groups conducted post-testing of the ego-resilience again in order to verify the effect of the program.
To verify the effect of the program, the statistical analysis of the test paper response using SPSS 23.0, the questionnaire after the program was completed, and the observations made by the researchers in each session were analyzed. Multivariate ANOVA(MANOVA) was performed to verify the difference in ego-resilience and Repeated MANOVA was performed to verify the changes within the group. Also, self-report scales, which was administered before and after the program, children’s feedback reports after every session, researcher’s qualitative analysis through the observation were analyzed. The results were as follows.
The experimental group participated in the REBT group counseling program using role-play had significantly higher ego-resilience compared to the control group and had significant higher interpersonal relationship, vitality, emotional control, optimism, which are sub-factor factors of the ego-resilience.
The analysis of children's opinions and researcher's observations led children to participate in the REBT group counseling program using role-play, showing more positive attitude toward ego-resilience than before. Through the process of recognizing irrational thoughts, rebut, practicing rational thoughts, ego-resilience was internalized and generalized on various scenes. And the treatment techniques of role-play were used to make familiar with rebut process in children’s daily life. As a result, ego-resilience increased and it was understood that the REBT group counseling using role-play process is helpful in developing ego-resilience.
These findings indicate that the REBT group counseling program using role-play had an effect on the increase in ego-resilience. In future studies, it is necessary to expand the scope of research subjects to generalize the REBT group counseling program and subsequent programs need to be developed to promote and maintain positive changes after the program ends. Also efforts will also be needed to verify the effect of the REBT group counseling program for various variables.
