이청준의『당신들의 천국』연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이청준의 『당신들의 천국』은 1974년과 1975년에 『신동아』에 연재되었다가, 1976년에 단행본으로 발표된 장편소설이다. 이 연구의 목적은 『당신들의 천국』에 나타난 인물들의 현실인식과 대응양상을 살펴서 그들이 추구하는 세계가 무엇인지 확인하고, 그것이 1970년대 사회에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지 밝혀보려는 것이다.
『당신들의 천국』에서 조백헌 원장에 의해 다시 시도되는 낙원은 지배자와 피지배자 상호간에 함께 만들어 가는 진행형의 모습으로 제시되고 있다. 그리고 『당신들의 천국』은 조백헌 원장을 내세워 지배자가 절대적인 정치권력을 가질 때에 생길 수 있는 억압의 양상을 보여주면서 권력의 허위성을 드러낸다.
또, 『당신들의 천국』은 지배와 피지배라는 억압적 관계가 피지배자의 자율성이 보장되지 않는 중에도 올바른 명분으로 실현될 수 있는지, 그 명분의 실현이 배반이 아닌 진정한 낙원으로 이어질 수 있는지에 대하여 의문을 제기하고 있는 작품이다. 작품에서 부정적인 의미의 정치 권력은 동상으로 형상화되는데 작가는 지도자가 내세우는 동상이라는 대상을 통해 부정적 권력의 억압이 허용되는 현실의 한계점을 지적하고, 사회 구성원들의 자율성이 바탕이 될 때 부정적 권력이 견제될 수 있음을 보여준다.
『당신들의 천국』은 억압적 상황에 맞서는 개인의 대응방식을 통해 적극적인 주체자의 모습을 보여준다. 이상욱 보건과장과 황희백 장로는 조백헌 원장이 낙원 건설의 과정에서 보이는 한계점을 수정하는 지식인의 역할을 담당하고 있다. 조원장은 이들과의 관계를 통해 과거 원장들이 가진 권력의 욕망을 극복하고 원생들과의 화해를 도모하게 되면서, 공동체의 일원으로 참가하게 된다. 그리고 『당신들의 천국』은 사회적 현실에서 강요되는 부정적인 권력을 자유, 사랑, 자생적 운명이라는 이념의 추구를 통해서 극복하고자 하는 특징을 가진다. 이청준은 권력은 자유와 사랑 위에 기초하고 있어야 하고, 이상적인 사회는 공동 운명을 가진 개인들이 실천적 힘을 모아서 자생적으로 이루어 갈 때에 가능하다는 의미를 전하고 있다.
『당신들의 천국』은 1970년대 개발과 독재로 대표되는 사회 상황이 소록도라는 공간을 통해 형상화되고 있다. 이청준은 현실에서의 개인적인 자유는 무시되고 미래의 과장된 희망만을 이야기하는 1970년대 지도층에 대한 비판을 제기했다. 그리고 국민들의 주체적인 동의 없이 자유를 담보로 추진되는 경제적 천국은 권력층의 천국은 될 수 있어도 사회 구성원 모두의 천국은 아니라는 사실을 강조하고 있다. 따라서 『당신들의 천국』은 당시 우리의 정치 현실이라 할 개발과 독재의 현실을 소록도의 상황에 비유하여 권력자와 민중의 진정한 화해를 통한 긍정적인 사회를 모색하고 있다는 점에서 1970년대 소설의 성과 안에서 큰 의미를 가진다.

Confirm, and is that clear what meaning it has on society in the 70s whether purpose of this study observes person's current legal seal and confrontation aspect that appear to “Your Paradise” and the world that they seek is what.
Paradise that is retried by Jo baek-heon director of an institution in “Your Paradise” is presented as image of progressive form that make together between ruler and the governed. And “Your Paradise” suggests Jo baek-heon director of an institution and when ruler has absolute political authority, expose falsity of power showing aspect of suppression that can occur.

“Your Paradise” is materialized society circumstance that is represented by development and dictatorship in the 1970s through space named Sorokdo. Lee cheong-jun passed criticism about ignored request private freedom in actuality leadership in the 1970s that talk future boastful.
