Today, the advancement of technology is diversifying the ways we work and blurring the boundaries of workspaces. The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has enforced social distancing policies, prompting many companies to adopt flexible working systems centered around 'non-face-to-face' interactions. Flexible work systems such as telecommuting, remote work, and smart work have been introduced, enabling employees to work from various locations other than the office. In this context, a new working model called "workation" is gaining attention. Workation is a hybrid working model that combines work and vacation, allowing employees to work remotely from vacation spots and enjoy leisure activities simultaneously. This model meets modern demands for work-life balance.
Workation is gaining attention not only as a work model for employees but also as a solution to various issues. Local governments and institutions are actively promoting workation systems to attract related populations and revitalize local economies. Consequently, various facilities and programs related to workation are increasing in different regions. However, the concept of workation is not yet clearly defined, and several limitations and issues have emerged in its early stages,
necessitating improvements. Moreover, with workation being recognized as a potential solution to the problem of regional depopulation, there is a need for in-depth research on utilizing unused spaces such as closed schools to create and activate workation spaces.
This study aims to renovate closed schools, which are often located in areas with good natural environments, advantageous locations, and spacious playgrounds, into spaces for workation.
The goal is to identify the existing spaces of closed schools and propose new directions for their use. Therefore, this paper aims to redesign unused regional closed
schools and propose them as workation facilities. The Bangdong Branch School of Girin Elementary School was selected as the subject through user surveys and case study analysis of workation facilities. Surveys were conducted to understand the requirements of workation facility users, and the characteristics of space
composition for workation facilities were derived. The analysis results highlighted the need for independent spaces, comfortable rest areas, flexible workspaces, and spaces for communication and information exchange, which were then implemented in the design.
Additionally, through case studies of unused closed school facilities, the components and layout of closed schools were examined, and the spatial scope and characteristics of workation facilities were derived.
The design concept of this study is set as "Light and Shadow in Nature." The space is designed to promote natural encounters among users to enhance creativity and efficiency in work, provide private workspaces free from disturbances, and offer relaxation spaces where users can relieve stress by feeling nature indoors.
By proposing a spatial design plan for regional closed schools for workation, this study aims to show the potential for revitalizing unused spaces in regions and to serve as basic data for planning workation facility spaces in response to changing work patterns.
