The purpose of this study is to discuss the present situation and problems of serials control in Korean university libraries. In detail, this study analyzes the problems related to serials control and management, and suggests the alternatives to solve the identified problems.
Focused on a National University Library, this study uses a case study method. Also utilized is a historical research method for the analysis of the historical progress of the serials department in the 'selected' university library.
The data for this study were collected by the following three methods: (1) document survey, especially collected and analyzed are documents internally-produced, working papers, and various statistical sources; (2) interviews with serials librarians in the 'P' university library; (3) observation of the real work process and environment.
The emphasis of this study was on identifying and analyzing the problems in serials management and use, particularly from the following three aspects : (1) organizational structure; (2) both quality and quantity of collection(serials); (3) the human factors - the qualifications of the 'professional' librarians.
Suggestions are also made for improving the quality in both serials management and use in the university library settings. This study concludes that serials librarians should prepare themselves to cope with both the rapidly developing information technology and the change in information needs of users.
