While the beauty industry of Korea has been attracting attention to such an extent that newly-coined words, such as K-beauty and cosmetic tourism, have emerged, there is also growing concern over the side effects accompanying this. However, it may not be possible to rule out a flow of modern culture flowing globally just fearing its side effects. In order to minimize the side effects and to develop a stable beauty industry, it is necessary to plan and research better beauty programs under the cooperation of medical professionals and beauty artists.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of aroma therapy on preoperative anxiety and postoperative satisfaction of patients in cosmetic surgery under local anesthesia, targeting patients undergoing cosmetic surgery in domestic plastic surgeons.
The subjects who participated in this study were men and women between the ages of 20 and 60 who were scheduled to undergo cosmetic surgery in D plastic surgery in Busan. 12 patients were selected for the experimental group and the control group respectively among those who planned eye, nose, thread lifting surgery using local anesthesia, and who were not suffering pregnancy, heart disease, epilepsy, hypertension, diabetes, etc. and were not receiving medication or hormone therapy for psychiatric diseases.
The study period was from April 20 to June 30, 2016. Each subject was given daily aroma therapy before surgery and postoperative five days. After the application of the aroma therapy, changes in anxiety and in vital signs before and after application of aroma therapy and subjective satisfaction after surgery were investigated.
For both the experimental group and the control group, preliminary consent forms were made before participating in the experiment, and general characteristics (age, sex, occupation, surgical experience and the body part for surgery) were surveyed, Also, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, and pulse rate were measured through electronic blood pressure devices. The degree of anxiety before surgery was measured using a visual analogue scale.
Twelve members of the experimental groups were treated aroma inhalation therapies daily 30 minutes before surgery and three times a day for five days after surgery, and experts conducted Lymphatic Drainage 30 minutes before surgery and once daily for five days. For the control group, Lymphatic Drainage was not conducted, but simple medical treatments were performed.
After the experiment through five days of treatment and aroma therapy, the subjective satisfaction of recovery after the cosmetic surgery of the experimental group and the control group was respectively investigated, and the idea of using aroma therapy of the experimental group who received aroma therapy was examined. The statistical analysis of the data obtained through the experiment was performed using SPSS. 21.0 program.
The results of the experiment of this study are as follows:
The demographic characteristics (age, sex, marriage, occupation, surgical experience, surgical parts) of 12 members of both the experimental group and the control group respectively were examined, and the demographic characteristics of the two groups were compared. As a result of the comparition, the two groups showed homogeneity as they didn't show any significance difference. In addition, the independent sample t test showed that the two groups showed homogeneity in vital signs (anxiety scale, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulses) before and after the surgery.
To compare the changes in vital signs (anxiety scale, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulses) of the experimental group with aroma therapy performed and the control group without aroma therapy performed, the vital signs before the surgery were placed as a covariate and the vital signs after the surgery as a dependent variable. As a result of covariance analysis, the level of anxiety decreased significantly in the experimental group, but in the control group, the level of anxiety rather increased over time.
In the same way, the pulses rate in the experimental group was significantly lower than those of the control group. This is assumed to be the result of an increase in the pulses rates due to anxiety and tension before surgery, and then a stabilization of the pulses after getting a psychological sense of stability by receiving aroma therapy. However, the changes in diastolic and systolic blood pressures were not significant between the two groups, indicating that the aroma therapy did not significantly affect the blood pressure of the patients before cosmetic surgery.
After the experiment, a questionnaire survey on surgical satisfaction was conducted for the two groups. As a result of examining whether there were differences in satisfaction with postoperative swelling, pains, bruises, skin recovery, postoperative management, preoperative management, and appearance change between the two groups. it showed that there were differences in skin recovery, postoperative management, preoperative management, appearance while there were no differences in swells, pains and congestion. The satisfaction of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group in all seven items. In addition, all of the respondents in the experimental group answered positively to the questions about the use of aroma therapy in the future. Especially, they answered that the therapy had the greatest effect on the psychological stability.
The results of this study showed that aroma therapy has a positive effect on the subjective satisfaction of patients undergoing cosmetic surgery. This result will be useful for practical application of aroma therapy as a preoperative and postoperative management in plastic surgeons and useful to utilize it as basic data of the follow-up study on medical esthetics.
