공간인식력 육성을 위한 교과서 그림지도 내용의 재구성 -초등학교 3학년 1학기 사회 교과서를 중심으로- = Reorganization of the Pictorial Map Unit in the Third Grade Social Studies Textbook for the Development of Spatial Perception

Maps are among the most suitable learning materials for 3rd graders` spatial perception, in the light of their classroom environment in an inner city and of their limited capacity for spatial recognition and map construction. First, reading of pictorial maps helps children`s spatial perception develop from survey of a village, classification of its spatial elements, to the recognition of its spatial structure. Next, drawing of a village map, through initial drawing and subsequent revisions, also contributes to the development of spatial recognition. Reading and drawing phases are then followed by an actual survey of the village. Unlike current textbook examples, field survey contributes to the revisions and sophistications of the drawn maps against the actual features of the village. After field survey and subsequent revisions of drawings comes the three-dimensional model construction. The final stage is the symbolization of geographical features into a standard map, completing the learning process for spatial perception.
