China's ancient Buddhist statues art has a long history, and during the recent thousand years, many classic statues have been created. These brilliant Chinese Buddhist art is profound. The shapes of the Buddha are vivid and lifelike, reflecting the wisdom and skills of working people. These Buddhist statues show not only high artistic achievement and historical value, but also outstand as the representative of sculpture art. Northwest is one of China's most prosperous regions of Buddhist statues. Connecting to the west of the Western Regions, Northwest is the main channel for the diffusion of Indian Buddhism and sculpture eastward. Maijishan, as one of China's four grottoes and the focus of this article, is at the traffic thoroughfare.
Magnificent grotto sculptures of Maijishan enrich the history of Chinese ancient sculpture. Meanwhile they not only have witnessed the introduction of Buddhist art from Western India but also then developed with unique Chinese characteristic. Maijishan Grottoes outperforms other similar style caves with its unique artistic style.
Nowadays, studies on Maijishan Grottoes are carried mainly in several aspects: the archeology, history, Buddhist themes and so on. Comprehensive analysis of the content and the styles of performances of Majishan cave status, and in-depth study of colorful mountain grotto sculpture style features in unique cultural environment are crucial to the research and development of contemporary sculpture art sculpture in China. The purpose of this article is to make up for deficiencies on Maijishan aesthetics and art studies, so that readers can gain a deeper understanding of the value of Maijishan exquisite sculptures and can better carry forward the China's folk art.
In this paper, I’ll use the methods of explanation and comparison etc. to carry forward a in-depth analysis of the Maijishan grottoes and niches Sui shapes , statues themes, style statues and other aspects during Northern Wei and Zhou. Maijishan Grotto is not only affected by the spread of Buddhism, but also by the impact of national culture and geography , and many other factors. This article, based on Maijishan sculpture style characteristics and development of the grotto sculpture , analyzed elaborately the status. Grotto in XiQin period shows the majestic atmosphere, outspoken quaint sculpture features, because at the time the Buddhist art in China hasn’t achieved full-fledge development. To a certain extent, the grotto is influenced by the Indian Buddhist Gandhara Art Nouveau. In Northern Wei Dynasty, Maijishan Grottoes Art is becoming mature, Buddhist statues, under the influence of national culture, began to show local characteristics. Till the late Northern Wei Dynasty, "Elegantly-and-Clearly-shaped" style sculpture appeared in Maijishan Grottoes in large numbers, this phenomenon representating the beginning of first peak for Maijishan grottoes art this. Then with the fusion of the Central Plains Han culture and many minorities culture, another noble and beautiful " Bo Yi Bo Dai" style has been spread to every corner of the country. So here’s prosperity and national culture, creating a another peak of Grotto Art Maijishan. Meanwhile the influence of the Buddhist art in Western Zhou Dynasty on Maijishan Grottoes almost disappeared, leaving Maijishan sculpture more pure and profound national cultural identity.
