In a world of growing enterprises and industries, how did logos come to be so important? And why have they become such an integral aspect of a company’s branding?
They often say that a picture is worth a thousand words, the reason being that an image, in one glance, can communicate more clearly an intended message than would a lengthy text. It isn’t so farfetched to conclude then, that a pictorial is more fruitful and attractable to audiences, for toddlers and adults alike. Symbols are a concise and precise way to communicate information. And in the case of starting businesses, the correct choice of logos for their companies can either make or break them.
My thesis will attempt to explain the importance of logos and why their place in a growing market is indispensable.
Starting companies (or Start-up as we will refer to them in this thesis) are up and coming companies with groundbreaking technologies and innovative ideas that provide a necessary shift in the set paradigm of existing industries. They bring in challenges and competition that positively affect economic growth, and set in motion the wheel for employment rates to increase.
In Korea currently, there are many “Start-up” companies. Due to the growing number of openings; many people have now adopted the entrepreneurial mindset. As the number of Startup companies increases, so does the practicality of Logo Design. Its importance is especially emphasized in its unique ability to differentiate companies from their competitors, setting them apart as entities of their own, and sequestering any part of ‘likeness’ they might share in order to bring about a more original ‘start’ at the company’s opening.
In the overheated competition market, logos have now become indispensable. They are being used as the visual representation of the company, in other terms its face and identity. Brand logos are the primary means of consumer attraction for companies as they play a key role in not only raising their brand’s awareness amongst the general public, but also in helping overcome the limitations a small business might encounter with their marketing strategies and initial capital fees. “Start-up” expenses tend to be small compared to their megalithic counterparts. Yet the importance of branding is still as relevant to them as it is to their competitors. Many of them, in fact, are aware of the need for Logo Design, and the demand for their services is at an all reaching high. The reality is, however, that Start-ups are quite limited within the design of their firms, and suffer consequently as a result. Previous studies, such as the “Logo design guidelines” and the “preference studies” have shown that compared to SMEs and other large corporations, there is a lack of resources being put towards starting companies. It further necessitates the need of Logo Design for these companies to be implemented to give them a fair chance at growth and continuous prosperity.
Logo Design doesn’t only aim to please its consumers with aesthetics; it also aims to expand its necessity in order to place itself as an important part of a company’s management strategy. Too many non-design issues such as organizational culture, communications and such, fall out of the jurisdiction of designing whereas they should be used as multi-faceted solutions.
Logos are what help create a connection between a company and its consumers. The higher the level of relatedness is, the easier it is to attract customers. Whether that be through the color the logo displays, or the image used to represent the brand, (an image in all likeness that may or may not resembles something the consumer likes or something he / she is familiar with,) there is no denying that it establishes a connection. However, just as logos can cause connections, they can also sever them, the main way being through confusing imagery. When the creation is especially erroneous, it can adversely affect the company’s brand negatively. If you create a brand logo without defining its corporate identity or vision, you will fail in coming up with an appropriate image that correctly represents what it stand for, and in turn will have to spend a lot of time and money to correct it.
A key element of branding identity; Logo design is one of the most important aspects a company can indulge in. It visually expresses its branding through cognitive imagery that can trigger the preference factor among consumers and establish the loyalty the company wishes to instill within them. Logo Design in itself is a function meant to satisfy one’s personal preference. However, if that was all it was, it would be too personified. Logo design also has the daunting task of expressing what the brand stands for, in other terms expressing its identity. Aestheticism and functionality are both elements that are indispensable to the operations of a company. It is therefore necessary to study consumer’s understanding of subjective characteristics such as lifestyle, and preferences. This directly corresponds to human subjectivity, and showcases how their behaviors cannot understand a social phenomenon to its existing one correctly. A method known as the Q methodology is then used as an alternative, since it can better grasp the human essence and social phenomenon.
The premise of this research is that it solely focuses on the subjective viewpoint of audiences. Based on this background, we can see how the acceptance of a logo design is achieved. There are two conditions of instruction that need to be met. The first being preference, and the second functionality. The challenge was in discovering whether these elements exist independently or interactively with one another. In order to solve this enigma, the Q methodology was applied and through it four types of consumer preferences were uncovered in relation to Start-Up’s logo design. In this study, a total of 53 Q samples (Start-Up logos) were used and applied to a Q sorting of 30 P samples (respondents), with the following results obtained with the QUANL analysis program.
As mentioned above, there are four types of preference and functionality for Start-Up logo designs, their names respectively being: “Intuitive seeking type – Application and creativity type – Functional meaning type – and Memory seeking type.”
The first type, being the “intuitive seeking type” was characterized by its intuitiveness, clarity and functionality. It’s a type of logo that showcases the identity of a company through intuition. It highlights the importance of correctly choosing a symbol that is suitable for the image of the company, and puts a high emphasis on using readable fonts that can express its element well. Being able to recognize a company intuitively is crucial as it distinct it from other not to intuitive logos. Using a symbol mark that can clearly define the characteristics of a company is a fruitful and advantageous choice.
The second type, known as the “application and creativity type” was characterized through its usage of creativity. Type 2 is a logo that shows great creativity in its application. It showcases the importance of designing a distinctive logo that represents the company’s identity through simple composition but a unique aesthetic style that is implicit and practical in its design.
The third type is the “functional meaning type.” It was characterized by its functional, semantic, and associative traits. Type 3 brings in the philosophy and value of the company by appropriately choosing colors and schemes that match the functional aspect and semantics of the brand.
The fourth and final type is named “the memory seeking type” characterized by familiarity, ease and clarity. Type 4 is a type of logo that is easy to remember, it’s distinct in the way that the pattern it uses aren’t distinctive but familiar. It uses simple form and avoids using too many components that are confusing.
In this study, we found that discovering and understanding schemata, which is a combination of preference and functionality combined into a specific form, gives a strategic perspective on the logo design of Startup companies. It suggests that we use directionality as a guideline for the logo creation in the future.
