The main purpose of this thesis is to understand the musical form and characteristics of Park, Palgyue's Gayageum Byungchang, by noting and listening his "Baekgu Taryeong(A seagulls ballad) · Sae Taryeong(bird ballad)," and comparing with the same tunes of other musicians. Simultaneously, this thesis also intends to look upon early stage of music related to Gayageum Byungchang when it was transferred from Pansori and upon its chronical change.
The phonograph record which became a subject for this study was Park, Palgyue's Gayageum Byungchang "Baekgu Taryeong · Sae Taryeong" released in 1915 by America's Victor records label. The songs which was compared by were Shim, Sang-geon's Gayageum Byungchang "Baekgu Taryeong · Sae taryeong" and Lee, Dong-back's Pansori "Sae Taryung."
To begin with, Park, Palgyue's music was analyzed following proceeding order as first of all, analyzing paragraph parts and music structure, then melody structure and punctuation melody form. And after these analysis, it was compared with the songs of Shim, Sang-geon and Lee, Dong-back. The results are as below.
First, Park, Palgyue's Gayageum Byungchang "Baekgu Taryeong" and "Sae Taryeong" can be divided into four, and three large paragraphs according to their narrative contents. The main difference between those of Shim, Sang-geon · Lee, Dong-back and that of Park, Palgyue lies in the fact that the latter have borrowed the narrative of "Hwacho Tareong(A Flower Ballad)" in his "Sae Tareong".
Second, Park, Palgyue's "Baekgu Tareong" is composed of G Bonchung Pyongjogil, and "Sae Taryeong" of G Bonchung Pyongjogil and A Bonchung Gyemyeongil. Meanwhile the modulation witnessed in Lee, Dong-back's Pansori "Saetaryung" are not shown in Park, Palgyue and Shim, Sang-gun's Byungchang.
Third, the melody progression of Park, Palgyue's Gayageum Byungchang is quite simple and repetitive compared with that of Shim, Sang-geon and Lee, Dong-back. Especially A dialogue(question and answer) form using refrain phrases and Hwandu·Hwanip(Head note change· identical repetition) form gives more prominence to its repetitive melody structure.
Forth, Park, Palgyue's Gayageum Byungchang are mostly constructed by simple end form and always ends by Bonchung. Lee, Dong-back's Pansori occasionally ends with a note outside its music scale. But Gayageum Byungchang always ends its note by Bonchung, and also occasionally ends by Gayageum itself.
Also, in the stage of shifting from Pansori to Gayageum, all the notes has entered under the range of Gayageum, and it has lead the reduction of its range. And some parts can be play by only Gayaguem. If one looks at its' chronical change, one can see Shim, Sang-gun's music commends more diverse melody forms; concluding that the latter generations have sought to break away from simplicity and repetitiveness of the early stage.
Up to now, I have looked throughly upon the features of Gayageum Byungchang in the era of early 1900s through the works of Park, Palgyue. Nevertheless, it is limited in fully understanding his music features and that of early Gayageum Byungchang form by dealing with limited subject matters; his "Baekgu Taryeong" and "Sae Taryeong". One must expect more music sources to be discovered and more active studies to rise upon related to music characteristics of the era.
