독서 지도를 통한 어휘력 신장 방안 연구 : 초등학생을 중심으로 = (A) Study on the Method to Improve the Vocabulary by Reading Guide : mainly with elementary school student's cases

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 어휘력 신장에 큰 역할을 담당하고 있는 독서를 통해 초등학생의 창의적이고 효율적인 어휘력 신장 방안을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 즉 어휘력 신장을 위해서 가질 수 있는 다양한 지도 방안들 가운데 독서 지도를 통한 신장 방안이 크게 효율적이라고 본 것이다.
이러한 관점 하에 본 연구에서는 Ⅱ장에서는 먼저 어휘력과 독서의 상관관계를 살펴보기 위해 이들의 개념부터 정리하였다. 어휘력에는 얼마나 많은 어휘를 구사하는가 하는 양적 능력과, 적재적소의 올바른 어휘 사용과 입체적 쓰임을 말하는 질적 능력이 있다. 이 두 가지 능력의 조화로운 사용을 통해 어휘력이 신장된다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 지금까지의 어휘 지도가 읽기 교육의 일부로써 이루어져 어휘력 신장을 위한 의도적이고 계획적인 노력에는 소홀했던 것이 사실이다.
독서는 문자 언어를 통해 독자가 의미를 재구성해 나감으로써 삶을 풍요롭게 하고 인간과 세계에 대한 폭넓은 안목을 기르게 하는 활동이다. 그러나 독서 지도 역시 열악한 독서 교육 환경으로 인해 형식적인 데 그치는 경우가 많았다.
어휘력과 독서는 서로 밀접하게 영향을 주고 받는다. 학습자의 풍부한 양적 어휘력과 수준 높은 질적 어휘력은 의미 있는 독서 활동을 이끌어 내기도 하고, 한편으로는 활발한 독서 활동을 통해 어휘력의 신장을 기대할 수 있게 된다. 이러한 어휘력과 독서 활동의 상호 관계 속에서 새로운 어휘를 계속적으로 발견하고 제 것으로 소화함으로써 학습자의 어휘력을 크게 신장시킬 수 있다.
이에 따라 Ⅲ장에서는 어휘 지도와 독서 지도상의 문제들을 극복하고 독서의 목적과 효과를 얻을 수 있으면서 어휘력 신장이 함께 이루어지는 방안들에 한정하여 프로그램 모형을 제시하였다. 프로그램 모형은 초등학교 6학년 학생들을 대상으로 하여, 언어 기능 교수 모형과 읽기 활동 전략인 '읽기 전 활동', '읽기 중 활동', '읽기 후 활동'을 바탕으로 구성하였다.
따라서 독서 지도를 통한 어휘력 신장의 방안으로 문맥 유추를 통한 어휘 지도, 의미 지도 그리기를 통한 어휘 지도, 상상하여 글쓰기를 통한 어휘 지도, 말하기를 통한 어휘 지도, 놀이를 통한 어휘 지도를 들어 프로그램 모형을 구체적으로 제시하였다.
이러한 연구로 인해서 기대되는 효과는 다음과 같다.
1. 어휘력과 독서 능력은 서로 밀접한 관계를 가지므로, 꾸준하고 계획적인 독서 활동을 바탕으로 하여 어휘력의 신장을 기대할 수 있으며, 뛰어난 어휘력은 독서 활동에 있어서 읽기 능력의 신장을 기대할 수 있을 것이다.
2. 어휘력 신장을 기대한 독서 과정에서 여러 가지 프로그램을 통해 다양한 독서 수업을 할 수 있을 것이다.
3. 어휘력 신장에 대한 적절한 지도 방법의 개발이 객관적인 검증을 바탕으로 하여 계속적으로 활발하게 논의될 것이다.
이상의 연구를 통해, 양적·질적 어휘력 신장을 위하여 본 연구자가 제시한 독서 지도 방안들이 학교 현장에 유용하게 적용될 수 있고, 앞으로도 계속적으로 보다 창의적이고 효율적인 독서 방안들이 연구되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to devise a creative and effective methods to increase the vocabulary of the elementary school student by means of reading which plays an important part in improving the vocabulary, that is, reading is considered as the most effective way to expand the vocabulary among many other available guidelines.
From this point of view, the general idea of the vocabulary and reading was clarified in the chapter Ⅱ to examine the correlation between those two. Vocabulary could be divided to the quantitative ability of how many vocabularies a person can freely use and the qualitative ability of how properly a person can use the right words in the right place and of the intensive use. Vocabulary could be increased by the harmonious use of both those abilities. However, teaching of vocabulary was directed as part of reading education so that the purposeful and deliberate effort to increase the vocabulary was neglected.
Reading is the activity by which readers reconstruct the meaning of words through the literal language, which makes their lives plentiful and allows them to cultivate their wide insight into the human being and world. But, a guide for reading also has ended up with a formal guide owing to poor educational circumstances about reading.
Vocabulary and reading is much affected by each other. An abundant quantitative and high qualitative vocabulary ability of a learner could lead to a meaningful reading, and meanwhile an improvement in the vocabulary could be expected by an active reading. We could expect that learners continuously find out a new vocabulary in such a relation of the vocabulary and reading activity and absorb those into themselves so that they could much improve their vocabulary.
Therefore, in the chapter Ⅲ program models are presented to overcome the problems in the vocabulary and reading guide, reach to the reading purpose and its effect together with the defined devices to increase the vocabulary. The 6th grade elementary school students-oriented program models are composed in the basis of "the language ability teaching model" and "the reading activity strategy" - "the activities before reading" and "the activities on reading".
Thus, as plans to increase the vocabulary by reading, we presented program models in details with an introduction to a vocabulary guide by a contextual analogy, a vocabulary guide by drawing a meaning map, a vocabulary guide by an imaginative writing, a vocabulary guide by speaking and a vocabulary guide by a play.
Followings are the effect that we can expect from the study as mentionedabove.
1. Vocabulary and reading ability is closely related to each other, so we can expect that the vocabulary could be improved by the steady and deliberate reading activities, and we can expect that an outstanding vocabulary would make it possible to expand reading ability in reading activities.
2. Various reading studies could be available by several programs in the course of reading in which a vocabulary improvement is expected.
3. How to develop proper methods to improve the vocabulary will be continuously and actively discussed on the basis of the objective verification.
By the studies mentioned above, it seems that reading guide methods that I presented to improve the ability of quantitative and qualitative vocabulary could be usefully practiced in the field of school and the more creative and effective reading plans should be studied.
