The purpose of this study was to explore the achievements of Kim Sanggyu through his life and his artistic activities, to examine his valuable phases in the history of dance, and to provide a basic data to Korea dance education together with suggestion of dance education.
The results of research are as follows.
First, in spite of the situations of the era when there were lots of troubles due to its social environment and economic hardship, Kim Sanggyu was a leading figure of dance popularization who presented more than 100 various works beginning with the first personal performance in 1949 and the thirteenth personal performance in 1979.
Second, in the situations of the era when the ground of dance or the social role of the field of arts were not so clear, Kim Sanggyu was the first male dancer who took the central role for the dance development in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area, being in charge of various roles in the field of arts as a choreographer, educator and administrator.
Third, Kim Sanggyu grasped the concept of modern dance and emphasized the dance theory along with the dance technique under the influence of the new dance of Ishii Baku and the modern dance of Isadora Duncan at early stage. Unlike the characteristics of the initial performance of Kim Sanggyu, modern dance works gradually became the mainstream. As a pioneer of modern dance in Daegu, Gim Sanggyu's such activities established the foundation of Daegu City Contemporary Dance Company, the only national and public organization nationwide.
Fourth, putting emphasis on the value of traditional culture that contains the history, Kim Sanggyu was a dance historian who stood at the forefront of our cultural heritage taking materials enough to be the history according to each age and important artistic resources as the subject of thesis in order to investigate, research and spread the artistic spirit and footsteps of our ancestors.
Fifth, Kim Sanggyu was a dance administrator who played an important role in raising the cultural status of dance, interchanging with artists in various fields and organizations like the Emergency People Propaganda Squad, the MunchongGugukDae, the Korea Federation of Arts and Culture Organizations and the Korea Dance Association, popularizing dance performances by organizing and planning events as major managing staff, and publishing theses to activate performance.
Lastly, having taught at education institutions in Daegu and Gyeongbuk including Andong National University of Education, Kim Sanggyu was a dance educator who made efforts for the development of dance science with the establishment of modern dance through dance classes, the establishment of dance subject in schools, the organization of a variety of courses, the cultivation of many students, and the right view of dance education and in-depth study of creative dance through theses.
As such, in spite of the difficult situations of the age and the distinct regional features in Daegu in which the conservative color is clear, Kim Sanggyu was a pioneer of modern dance who played the pivotal role to develop modern dance in Daegu-Gyeongbuk region with various activities. He might also be called the pride of the dance circle in Daegu and Gyeongbuk as the first male dancer who left achievements in related history, administration and education.
Therefore, it is urgently needed to reilluminate and evaluate Kim Sanggyu's achievements in the history of arts, the history of dance and the history of dance education, and ongoing research will be desirable.
