미국 공공도서관의 어린이 서비스에 대한 고찰 = A Study on American Public Library Services for Children

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study as a literature review was to investigates public library services for children in the United States, conducted by reviewing relevant documents, books, and statistical data, searching web resources, interviewing children's librarians through e-mails and visiting children's rooms of public libraries in the U. S.
The results of the study were as follows：
First, public library services for children in the United States has been developed for one hundred and thirty years, after passing the period of rise, expansion, and conversion. Second, the service for children was one of the most essential services in public libraries. Third, public libraries in the U.S. provided various services for children, which included both of the long- and short-term programs. Fourth, there were specific undergraduate courses for children's librarianship and retraining programs for improving specialization and professionalism. In conclusion, in Korea, further researches are required to institutionalize the library service for children and to improve the professionalism of the children's librarian.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 미국의 공공도서관 어린이 서비스에 대한 문헌 연구로, 관련 문헌 및 통계 자료, 인터넷 검색, E-mail 인터뷰, 웹 자료 탐색 및 미국 내 공공도서관 어린이 열람실 탐방으로 연구문제를 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 최근 중요성과 가치를 인정받고 성장하기 시작한 우리나라의 어린이 도서관 서비스에 주는 시사점을 모색하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 미국 공공도서관 어린이 서비스는 19세기 말에 시작되어 확장기를 거쳐, 최근 성숙기이자 전환기를 맞고 있다. 둘째, 미국 공공도서관은 주민 생활과 밀접한 관련을 가진 기관으로 기능하고, 특히 어린이 서비스가 도서관에서 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 셋째, 미국 공공도서관 어린이 서비스의 유형은 연중 제공되는 서비스와 단기 서비스가 있으며, 서비스 유형에 따라 다양한 서비스가 제공되고 있다. 넷째, 미국 공공도서관에서는 전문성을 지닌 어린이사서가 어린이 서비스를 제공하며, 어린이사서 양성 과정이 체계적이고 재교육이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 결론적으로, 미국 공공도서관의 어린이 서비스는 130여년의 발전 과정을 거쳐 중요한 서비스로 기능하고 있으며, 자격을 갖춘 어린이사서의 전문성을 바탕으로 다양한 유형의 서비스가 제공되고 있다. 우리나라도 어린이를 위한 도서관 서비스 정착과 어린이사서의 전문성 향상을 기하기 위한 추후 연구가 필요하다
