      This study examined the current situation of policies focusing on the home pages of such government branches as the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and such Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education as Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Gyeonggido Office of Education, and Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, to grasp and analyze the current situation of the education and welfare supporting policies for children of multicultural families.
      The categories of children of multicultural families in this study were limited to children of international marriage families, children of foreign workers' families, and North Korean defectors' families, and the cases of the Unites States, Canada, France, and Germany were examined to analyze foreign policies for multicultural children and to derive some implications through the analysis.
      The analytic results of this study are as follows.
      First, there exist imbalances among the beneficiaries of the supporting policies for multicultural children. If we look into the policies of government branches and Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education, those beneficiaries tend to concentrate into the families of international marriage women immigrants. And even though the Ministry of Education has been providing the children of North Korean defectors' families with the supporting policies since several years ago, there have been almost no support for the children of foreign workers' families.
      Secondly, the efficiencies of the policies are inadequate. Even though South Korea arranges the competency building policy for multicultural children as part of policies of embracing all of them, and proceeds with the policy of having them cultivate responsible attitude toward peace, human rights, and diversity as the U.S. does, those policies haven't been working in the field.
      Thirdly, there is lack of unity among the ideologies of policies across the support targets. Something very strange is happening like that on the one hand exclusion policy has been adopted for foreign workers and their children, and assimilation policy for international marriage women immigrants and their children, on the other multiculturalism highlighting integration is emphasized from the standpoint of overall societal discourse,
      This study has its meaning in that it prepares and analyzes improvements to the policies for multicultural children in Korea, by investigating the current situation of the education and welfare supporting policies for school age children of multicultural families through home pages of government branches and Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education, and deriving implications for improvements from the policies for multicultural children of advanced foreign countries.
