This study analyzed the movement and psychological expressions of 「Secret-episode1.sadness」 created focusing on human psychology itself according to the flow of 20th-century modern ballet by using effort-shape analyzing method of Laban. Through this, the purpose of this study is to explore how the characteristics of movement interrelates with psychological expression, and also what the nature of that expression is.
In order to create a ballet work for psychological expressions, the secret which everyone has was selected as a title, and the choreography was made based on the theme of a woman who was in a sad love with an assumption that the figures of secret appear as delight, anger, sadness and joy, the basic emotional categories of human being. By analyzing the created work, 「Secret-episode1.sadness」 applying effort-shape theory of Laban, tendency of inner compulsion toward psychological expressions contained in the work was examined according to theme and contents, music and costume, and stage pattern and movement, and following results were attained.
First, the theme of the work 「Secret-episode1.sadness」 is sadness of four basic emotions, delight, anger, sadness and joy, which is the most essential emotions of human being, and inner expression toward the sad love was focused on. Prologue and 3 chapters expressed sad feelings and torment to her lover with the ballet movements. Also, for dramatic scenes in each chapter, changes of character's psychological state was given delicately, and it aimed to induce psychological changes of audiences by giving shape to inner sad emotion with movements.
Second, the movements in the work, 「Secret-episode1.sadness」 was based on traditional movements of ballet, and by adding expressional movements, ordinary movements and gestures of modern ballet, the effects were amplified through movements focusing on message delivery. This is because there is a limitation to express subtlety of sensitive and delicate psychological changes only with artful and technical ballet movements. Appropriate balance of emotions was highly regarded by expanding the range of movements with use of free motions modifying traditional ballet techniques and expression of various motions according to ordinary movements.
Third, it was shown that use of appropriate movements according to inner psychology added the effect in delivering the image of the work and psychological expression more deeply through effort-shape analysis. Psychological factors of fluttering mind, conflicting and tormented mind, and open and closed mind expressed the psychological changes more remarkably through use of mutually contrasted effort-shape factors such as direct and indirect space effort and upward and downward shape, and it helped deliver the theme of the work meaningfully.
Fourth, music and costume in the work, 「Secret-episode1.sadness」 maximized the essential meaning which the work aimed to express by having a complementary relation. As for music, 『Chaconne in G minor for violin and piano』 written by Vitali and arranged by Kwon SoonHwon was re-edited and used, depicting the character's psychological changes through the development of melody. Color of costume was mainly grey, expressing sad and mournful psychological mood toward hopeless love, and light tunic design of the costume exposed the line of movements.
As examined above, the study on the work, 「Secret - episode1.
sadness」 understanding the characteristics of movements in the work and examining its psychological expression and correlation by applying effort-shape analyzing method of Laban is one of studies which suggested analyzing methodology of ballet works, and will be able to be utilized as a choreographic method which enables communications between audiences, a choreographer and dancers as well as interest in human's psychology.
