The family has undergone significant changes including increase of different and diverse types of families. With this change, embracing diversity of families and reducing stereotypes on certain types of families have become important values to pursue. However, negative perceptions and stereotypes on single parent families are still pervasive. In the body of studies on single parent families, adolescents from single parent families were assumed to be in a vulnerable and deficient position compared to those from intact families; thus, they were expected to show negative developmental outcomes relative to those from intact families. The present study questioned the assumption of the traditional family ideologies which assumed intact families with two parents as a norm and postulated negative developmental outcomes of adolescents from single parent families. Rather than comparing adolescents’ adjustment between family types (structures), this current study aimed to explore the differences and diversity in adjustment of adolescents from single parent families. Moreover, this study focused on parenting style as an important factor influencing adjustment types of adolescents from single parent families; especially, this study explored the parenting profiles or types to enhance further and specific understanding of parenting styles in single parent families. Lastly, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between parenting types (profiles) and adjustment types (profiles) of adolescents in single parent families.
To explore parenting types and adolescents’ adjustment types from single parent families, and to examine the relationship between the two variables, 323 cases of adolescents from single parent families were derived from 2nd wave (2019) of Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018). For statistical analysis, this study employed descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and latent profile analysis. Especially, in terms of latent profile analysis, this study used three-step approach, which is regarded as an advanced approach as it considers classification errors. Moreover, since this study was aimed to examine the relationship between two latent profiles (parenting profiles and adjustment profiles), latent transition analysis was adopted which is for examining the relationship between two latent profiles. Primary findings are summarized as follows.
First, when it comes to parenting style, two parenting types were identified. The 1st group showed higher levels of warmth, autonomy support and provision of structure, and lower levels of reject, coercion, and inconsistency. As parental warmth, autonomy support, and provision of structure are known to fulfill basic psychological needs of children, this group which showed higher levels of warmth, autonomy support, and provision of structure was named as ‘supporting psychological needs type’. Compared to the ‘supporting psychological needs type’, the 2nd group showed relatively lower levels of warmth, autonomy support, and provision of structure, and higher levels of reject, coercion, and inconsistency. Moreover, this group was characterized by mixture of both positive and negative parenting. Therefore, the 2nd group was named as ‘mixed type’.
Second, two adjustment types were identified. The 1st type showed higher levels of psychological-behavioral problems (depression, social withdrawal, and aggression), lower level of self-perception (self-esteem) and lower level of school adjustment (relationship with friend, relationship with teachers, and academic achievement). Thus, it was named as the ‘group with lower level of adjustment’. The 2nd group showed lower levels of psychological-behavioral problems (depression, social withdrawal and aggression), and higher levels of self-esteem and school adjustment (relationship with friends and teachers, and academic achievement). Therefore, this group was named as the ‘group with higher level of adjustment’.
Third, parenting type was associated with adjustment type of adolescents from single parent families. Adolescents from single parent families who experienced ‘supporting psychological needs type’ of parenting were more likely to be in the ‘group with higher level of adjustment’.
In conclusion, aforementioned results of the current study indicate that traditional family ideologies which assumed negative adjustment and developmental outcomes of adolescents from single parent families cannot be universally supported; and the results show that what matters to adjustment of adolescents from single parent families is the positive and quality parenting not the family structure itself. Based on the findings, this study discussed theoretical and practical implications and contributions.
