Discussions of children without disabilities who have parents with disabilities have predominantly adopted either a young caregiver perspective or a deficit-based approach emphasizing the difficulties and deprivations these children face, reflecting broader societal prejudices surrounding the parenting rights of people with disabilities. Recognizing the limitations of this deficit-oriented lens and the paucity of practice-based and policy interventions addressing this population, this study comprehensively explores the lived experiences of adolescents without disabilities who have parents with physical disabilities to establish an empirical foundation for targeted support interventions. The study employs a multiple qualitative research design integrating Grounded Theory and Photovoice within a theoretical framework that synthesizes strength-based, growth-oriented, and resilience perspectives, thereby facilitating a more nuanced understanding of these adolescents' life experiences.
The Grounded Theory component involved in-depth interviews with 16 adolescents without disabilities (aged 13-18) living with parents with physical disabilities. This inquiry examined not only the challenges these adolescents encounter but also their growth experiences emerging from interactions between their inherent strengths and resources and the multidimensional environmental contexts surrounding them. Findings reveal that while these adolescents experience multifaceted hardships resulting from structural ableism and discrimination within disability-exclusionary social and cultural contexts, they simultaneously achieve significant growth through identity transformation and internal maturation. This development occurs through cognitive understanding and psychological acceptance of their parents' disabilities, coupled with critical reflection on and active coping with their life circumstances.
The Photovoice component engaged five adolescents without disabilities who have parents with physical disabilities in an online-based participatory photography project. This phase focused on resilience as a facilitator of growth, exploring environmental contexts and experiences that either strengthen or impede resilience development. Consistent with the methodology's emphasis on participant agency and empowerment, the study identified key lived experiences centered on four environmental contexts: "parents with disabilities as a steadfast foundation," "inner strength for self-protection and growth," "surrounding environments where constraints and resources coexist," and "expectations and hope for the future."
Synthesizing both components, the findings demonstrate that the lives of adolescents without disabilities with parents with physical disabilities constitute a journey of active coping and growth. Despite experiencing structural barriers and discrimination, these adolescents demonstrate resilience and growth rooted in disability pride and an expanded sense of agency. These findings challenge dominant deficit-based discourses about families with parents with disabilities and their children without disabilities, underscoring the necessity of strength-based social work interventions to promote the growth and resilience of this population.
