Furthermore, regarding degrees of consideration when buying foods in general, there showed higher tendencies to choose one particular kind of products concerning cookies and beverages, and by gender, female rather than male students showed higher propensities to choose particular kinds of products. In addition, female rather than male students showed higher propensities to check food labels. Also, female rather than male students were more affected by food advertisements, product packages and design regarding food purchasing behaviors.
As a result of surveying regarding the actual state of reading food labels, regarding degrees of recognition of food labels, it was revealed that 91.1% of female students recognized them, while 42.1% of male students did not recognize them, indicating lower levels of recognition among the male group. Again, as a result of surveying the necessity of food labels, 93.6% of female students agreed on the necessity, while 35.6% of male students did not agree on it, indicating lower degrees of understanding the nutrition facts labeling system among the male group.
Regarding reasons for not checking food labels, 49.2% indicated habitual purchasing, followed by poor contents in the label (20.2%), ununderstandable contents (17.7%), and the lower reliability of the contents (6.9%). They had many experiences in reading nutrition fact labels, while did not utilize nutrition information despite higher degrees of recognition of the necessity of nutrition facts labeling and education and promotion regarding them.
