In 20th century, the modern and contemporary history of Korean
painting underwent a great confusion and anguish periods due to the
Japanese colonial rule and the Korean war.
After Korea sloughed off the limited range of China, the
introduction of western fine art and process of development caused
many problems in that New fine art style of Korea was established
The direction of this thesis is set to investigate the New fine art
style and the frontiers of it at the time as solving the four questions
as follows; when the period of the Korean Traditional Art started to
contact the Western Fine Art. the social atmosphere of this period,
the early stage of painting style, who were the forefront and how they developed their activities.
Actually, New Art Style was started in 1909 by Chungok, GO
Hui-dong who majored in western painting in University of Tokyo.
However, leaving only few self-portraits and finishing his
involvement of the association of Seowha(Painting and Calligraphic
works), his pioneering trial was frustrated due to the limits of
himself and the lack of cultural, social awareness about the New Fine
Art style of Korea.
The evaluation of many modern critics about Chungok is not so
high. Although he was worshipped as 'A pioneer of the Korean
Fine Art' or 'The No. 1 of accepting the western fine art by
people at that time. Western painting in Korea is evaluated as it
was retained not by certain artists but some local artists who were
in charge of education of fine art in each place and the Japanese
artists forming the representative groups of artists in Korea.
It is true that Chungok, Go Hui-dong contributed to the Korean
modern painting as a pioneer, but it is regrettable that he could not
completed his duty as a forerunner of the western painting
suppressed by the social and cultural circumstances of the time.
