한국 성 소수자의 성 파트너링 유형 파악: 수정된 성각본 이론을 바탕으로 = A Study on Partnering Patterns of Sexual Minorities in Korea: Based on Sexual Script Theory

This study conducted nine in-depth interviews to examine and identify the partnering patterns of sexual minorities (homosexual) that have direct implications of public health. Diverse forms of identity-related psychological distresses of sexual minorities are well known and the sexual matching patterns of sexual minorities have direct effects on the dynamics of sexually transmitted diseases. Direct application of script theory (Simon & Gagnon, 1986) to our data revealed the approach's limitations. First, we have to add one more level of script,‘community level’ in addition to its original three levels to properly explain the processes of sexual partnering in Korea. Also we had to incorporate the homosexual identity process prosed by Cass (1979; 1984) to fully understand the picture of identity development and its effects on community activities and later, sexual parterning. Based on adjusted script theory, we could successfully identify four distinctive sexual partnering patterns out of nine in-depth interviews. The first one refers, we call it ‘community script’, very distressful identity formation, active adoption of community script especially as a sex market, and as a result short-lived multiple sex partnership in a given period. People who adopted the second script, called ‘societal script’, went through relatively less stressful identify formation and only participated communities that were tightly embedded in every day lives and had relatively small number of sex partners with relative long durations. These first two patterns were discovered among males. The third one showed the identify formation that is more tightly embedded in everyday lives rather than in sexual drive, least participation in communities, and small number of partnership that lasted relatively long. We call this script as ‘dyadic script’. Sexual minorities who revealed the last script, ‘internal script’, developed sexual identity mainly through sexual drive and participated communities moderately. Their sexual partenring pattern was similar to one of ‘community script’ although the number of sex partners was little bit smaller. This research revealed that sexual partnering patterns of sexual minorities in Korea were not identical and we could identify four different patterns based on adjusted script theory. Depending on specific partnering pattern the sexual minorities adopt, their sexual behaviors have different effects on their psychological well-being and the dynamics of sexually transmitted diseases.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 한국의 성 소수자들을 둘러싼 보건적 문제를 성 소수자들의 파트너링 양상에 대한 구체적인 분석을 통하여 접근하는 것이다. 연구의 방법론으로서, 성 소수자 아홉명에 대하여 심층면접을 실시하였고, 심층 면접으로부터 얻어진 질적 자료를 분석하여 이들의 성 파트너링 양상을 유형화하였다. 질적 자료는 Simon과 Gagnon의 성 각본 이론(Simon & Gagnon, 1986)을 통하여 분석되었으며, 분석 과정에서 성 각본 이론의 이론적 한계를 보완하기 위하여, 성 각본 이론의 후속 연구에 대한 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 ‘커뮤니티 층위’ 개념을 추가하고 이에 Cass의 동성애 성정체성형성이론(Cass, 1979; 1984)을 통합하여 성 소수자들의 성 파트너링 유형을 분석하였다. 수정된 성 각본 이론을 바탕으로 본 연구는 면접 대상자를 네 가지의 성파트너링 유형으로 유형화하였다. 첫 유형은 ‘커뮤니티 각본’유형으로서 다른 각본에 비해 동성애자 커뮤니티 수준에 존재하는 각본을 적극적으로 수용하며, 비교적 짧고 많은 파트너링을 가진다. 다음으로는 ‘사회적 각본’유형으로, 이들은 동성애자 커뮤니티 수준의 각본보다는 사회적 통념에 기반한 각본을 중심적으로 수용하며 상대적으로 적은 수의 파트너를 오랜 기간 만나는 것으로 드러났다. 세 번째 유형은 ‘대인적 각본’으로서 외부적인 각본보다는 파트너 사이의 관계를 중심으로 성 파트너링과 성 행동을 실행하는 경향을 보인다. 이 경우에도 적은 수의 파트너와 오랜 기간 관계를 유지한다. 마지막으로, ‘내면적 각본 기반’에 속하는 이들은 정체성 인지 과정이 주로 내면적인 성욕에 근거하고 있으며 성시장으로서의 기능을 어느정도 수용하는 단계의 커뮤티니 참여를 하고 있었다. 이들의 성파트너링 유형은 ‘커뮤티니 각본’과 유사하나 그보다는 수도 적고 기간도 길었다. 이 연구는 성소수자들의 성파트너링이 동일한 것이 아니라 그들의 성정체성 인식 과정과 그와 연관된 그 후의 일련의 커뮤니티 참여 양상에 체계적으로 연결되어 있음을 보여주며 그 결과 네 가지의 유형화가 가능하며 이러한 유형에 따라 이들의 정신 건강이나 성병 전염에서의 역할이 상이하게 다름을 보여준다.
