게이 남성의 소비 공간과 몸의 정치학 = The Body Politics of Korean Gay Men in Gay Consumer Spaces

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1990년 중반 한국 사회는 근대적 게이 운동의 등장과 발전이라는 새로운 현상을 맞이했다. 몇몇 게이와 레즈비언 운동가들은 동성애를 욕망과 실천뿐만 아니라 정체성과 커뮤니티의 기반으로 정치화시켜서, 성적 시민권의 기반을 마련하고자했다. 그러나 이런 운동이 충분히 뿌리를 내리기도 전에 동성애 욕망을 상품화시키는 게이 소비 공간들, 게이 바와 댄스클럽, 게이 찜질방 등 남성 동성애자의 공적 만남의 장이 확산되고 있다.
본 연구자는 이런 공간들을 통해 한국 게이남성들이 또 다른 정치, 즉 "몸의 정치"를 실천하고 있다고 주장한다. 몸의 정치라는 것은 게이 바와 댄스클럽에서 일어나는 춤과 크루징(cruising) 그리고 찜질방에서 일어나는 섹스 같은 쾌락의 집단적 실천을 통해서 게이 남성들은 그들의 동성화된 몸과 욕망을 비정상과 병리화가 아닌 하나의 쾌락과 욕망의 대상으로 재 의미화하고 있다. 더불어 이런 집단적 쾌락의 실천들은 동성애 정체성과 커뮤니티의 기반이 되기도 한다.
본 논문에서 연구자는 한국 게이 커뮤니티의 주요 인물들(약 45명)과의 인터뷰와 참여 관찰을 통해 게이 커뮤니티의 개념이 변화, 발전되는 상황을 분석했다. 인터뷰 방법론은 기존의 가부장적이고 이성애규범적인 사회에서 주변화 되어왔고 침묵하고 있었던 게이 남성들의 목소리를 통해 그들의 경험을 언어화할 수 있다는 면에서 유용하다. 그뿐만 아니라 지배 문화의 공식적인 역사 내에서 지워졌었던 게이 역사를 재창조하는데 있어서도 필수적이다.
본 논문은 여러 가지 면에서 의의가 있다. 첫째로, 예전에는 소수의 변태적 사람들에게만 한정되어 존재한다고 간주되어왔던 동성애 욕망이 실재하고 있으며 이런 욕망이 비밀스러운 한국 게이 소비 공간을 조성하는 기반이 되었다는 것을 보여준다. 둘째로, 공식적인 게이 운동의 쇠퇴에도 불구하고 한국 게이 남성들이 몸의 정치학이라는 새로운 정치를 실천하고 있다는 것을 보여준다. 셋째로, 기의(referent)의 지점이 이성애가 아닌 동성애가 됐을 때 공적 영역과 사적 영역, 소비, 섹슈얼리티와 젠더의 개념들이 어떻게 변화될 수 있는 것에 대한 이론을 함의 하고 있다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 사람들의 몸과 사회적 관계들을 통제했던 기존의 젠더와 섹슈얼리티의 각본이 후기 근대사회에서 무너지면서 섹슈얼리티가 이런 변화들과 새로운 현상들을 어떻게 구성하고 있는 것에 구체적인 예를 제시 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the mid-1009s, South Korean society saw the development of a new phenomenon-the emergence and development of a modern gay movement. Using modern Wstern discourses of homosexuality that conceptualized it as not only a sexual practice but also a source fo identity and community, Korean gay and lesbian activists tried to politicize homosexuality and to create the basis for sexual citizenship. However, before the movement could fully take root, it was overtaken by the rapid commodification fo homoerotic desire that resulted in a plethora of gay consumer spaces such as gay gars, gay dances-clubs and gay bathhouse.
In this thesis, the researcher examines how Korean gay men, despite the decline of constitutional-style gay activism, are practicing a new type of politics-body politics-to resist and subvert the dominant patriarchal heteronormative order in Korea. Through embodied performances such as dancing, cruising. and drag shows in gay bars and dance-clubs and sex within gay bathhouses, they are re-signifying the meaning of their "homosexualized" bodies from one of pathology and abnormality to pleasure and desire. These collective practices of pleasure, in turn, are creating the basis for a homosexual identity and community.
Interviews with over 45 key members of the gay community along with participant observation were conducted over a period of one year. The methodology of interviews is useful for giving gay men who have traditionally been marginalized and silenced within the dominant patriarchal and heteronormative order the power to voice their own experiences. However, it is necessary to recreate a sense of gay history that has been lost within the official history of the dominant culture.
This thesis is significant in several ways. First, it shows how homosexual desire, traditionally considered too dirty to mention by name and condined to only a few perverted individuals, has, in fact, created a whole secret world of consumption where gay men find a source of pleasure and identification. second, it reveals how, despite the decline of the offcial gay movement, Korean gay men are engaging in a new type of politics-body politics. Third, it shows how the concepts of public/provate, sexuality, gender, and consumption change their meanings once the dominant point of reference becomes not the heterosexual couple but gay men. Finally, it demonstrates the need to treat sexuality as an important field of research. As traditional scripts of gender and sexuality that once governed the bodies and social relations of people break down in the 21st century, a deep sense of nurse and insecurity as well as new sources of pleasure and identification are being generated. This thesis is one example of how researchers, using sexuality as an important analytic category, can study these changes.
