1. Meaning of the Study
Equal opportunity of education consists the basis for social equality and realization of justice society.
One of the most difficult problems in school education is how all the participating students achieve full learning, It is admitted that only 1/3 of students accomplish so called full learning whereas the rest of students achieve only limited learning.
In terms of learning capability, there are individual differences, including retarded learers. However, efficient learning can also be provided to these students provided proper development of special learning programs for efficient learning, etc. In other words, Provision of educational help can aid retarded students in achieving satisfactory educational results comparable to normal students' results.
2. Purpose of the Study
Attitude of retarded students, along with misconduct of problem students form one of the most important tasks for school education. Considering that the problem of retarded students has to be solved by school teachers, the affect of the guidance of school teachers and the affect of their attitude on education and children is very important.
In this regard, this study is aiming at finding out what type of education enhances the school performance and the motivation of learning retarded students by investigating the difference between small group learning and large group learning.
3. Subject of the Study
2 retarded classes of the 8th grade of B Junior High School consisted of retarded students selected by Che previous year's record were selected as the subject of this study.
4. Method of the Study
A review was made on the previous research on learning retarded students. Two classes of identical I.Q distribution were selected while one was used as experimental group and the other was used as control group. The experimental group was regrouped as small groups, giving each group an opportunity for previous discussion before the school hours, while the control group, as a large group, was given identical learning session to the group members.
An analysis of the result of learning attitude score along with the performance record was made after a certain period of the above described learning.
5. Conclusion
Teachers face with the problem of how to make students concentrate to the learning subject when the class is composed of many different students.
Small group and large group learning were experimented in an attempt to find out which method is better and more efficient. Small group learning proved to be more efficient in promoting thinking ability by efficient communication in small group.
In addition, retarded students improved in expression ability, while the expression and attitude of retarded students in class also showed improvement to promote more cooperative activity in class.
However, some limited number of students did not show any improvement.
