This study puts emphasis on the research on how the locals having space, human and living-cultural resources connect to the urban regeneration and investigates striking examples which can take advantages of the resources of historical culture.
Over the past 50 years, Korea has met the supply of housing and land through building new towns and advancement of new cities; however, we are at the turning point in the changes which is from the compact urban development to new urban planning. New types of alterative, urban regeneration has come into the pictures instead of construction of new towns and the overall rebuilding. Urban regeneration could make the town which used to be deprived population of the developed cites revitalized. Such regions are likely to contain resources of historical culture. As the concept of preservation forthe resources of historical culture has been turned the dotted shape into spatial aspect these days, the necessity that the application method of the resources of historical culture should be interrelated with urban regeneration is more demand than ever before. Especially not only strong desires for the preserving resources of historical culture but also efforts to finding their local identity and boosting local economy could promote the complementary relationship between resources of historical culture and the urban regeneration.
The discussion has been carried out outside for a long time : however, it is in its early stages in Korea. There are some challenges which we should tackle. The former projects in Korea were so inadequate to deal with a variety of difficulties in the past. Under the awareness of preserving resources of historical culture, people had no choice but to focus on physical and spatial organization, which resulted in that people pay no attention and think of the life and culture separately. In other words, the more the resources of historical culture was important, the more the results was on the wrong track.
Therefore, this study carried out the research on the mutual relationship of space resources, human resources and living-culture resources instead of products coming from physical preservation of historical-cultural environment. Furthermore, the study inquired into how the combination of three resources have effect on external supports like administration.
This study analyzed the pros and cons of the application method from 6 regions as examples where there were positive effects on the urban regeneration by using of resources of historical culture. This study selected sites: Bukchon in Sooul, Art platform in Incheon as examples in metropolitan and Wonchon village of Jeongup as examples in countryside. In addition, the cases of foreign country, this study investigated several areas in Japan including Hirano of Osaka as examples in metropolitan, Nagahama in Siga as small and medium sized city and Kawakoe in Saitama.
Consequently substantial traits from the results are as follows.
First. the resource of regions is classified into space, human and living-cultural resources. Moreover, administration and experts out of the external supports are considered to be one of the important resources.
Second, securing for continuity of urban regeneration counts on organization, education of human resources and reproduction.
Third, the main resources vary according to the local disparity and the criticality can be affected by diverse circumstances.
Fourth, the relationship of resources is changed by time and circumstances constantly.
Fifth, the relationship of resources takes place inner part of resource and each connection has individual features.
Sixth, when it comes to urban regeneration taking advantage of resources of historical culture, the relationship of resources is not the same and intimately so changed that active and long-term managements are needed.
