The curricula for the major in Korean traditional music composition consist of varied subjects, which count much more than in other university programs. In particular, continuing specialist subjects, such as traditional musical language, Western musical language, practice in electro-acoustic music, and composition workshops, have served to strengthen studentsʼ creative capabilities remarkably. However, the major subjects take up an inordinate amount of time so that students cannot make broader choices, which needs to be rectified. There is a need for more subjects to help students to develop their knowledge of the humanities and logical thinking as well as their practical abilities. Although the masterʼs programs, since their establishment in 1999, have been producing outstanding individuals, the lack of doctoral courses has meant that the universityʼs distinctive programs do not continue on to the highest level. Hence, the establishment of doctoral programs at the university is long overdue.
