It is true but trite to note that wife battering is a serious social problem in Korea. In particular, wife battering affects not only husbands and wives but also their children, who are likely to experience many adjustment problems. Research efforts or intervention programs on wife battering, however, have so far largely focused on the parents to such an extent that their children are virtually excluded as the subject of research. Since the 1980s many western countries have embarked on various research programs for the children who are exposed to wife battering, whereas there are few research efforts for them in Korea, let alone any intervention programs.
This study aims at devising a group program for improving adjustment of the children exposed to wife battering and by evaluating its effectiveness developing a systematic program for intervention. In order to attain these research objectives, preliminary research, program development, and experimental studies have been carried out. Some of its main research findings can be summed up as follows.
First of all, the preliminary research has strongly indicated that the children exposed to wife battering exhibit a host of serous emotional, behavioral, and social problems, and that they also have distorted perceptions and/ or inappropriate reactions toward wife battering. In particular, unlike the existing literatures focus on their behavioral problems, the preliminary research has found that their emotional problems are more serious.
Second, built upon the literature review and the results of the preliminary research, the program has been devised so as to promote the children's adjustment capability. More specifically, it intends to reduce their emotional problems and aggressiveness, enhance their social skills and self-esteem, help to acquire their proper perceptions and reactions toward wife battering. A short-term structured program designed for elementary school students was constructed for eight group sessions, and in light of the extensive nature of the adjustment problems of the children exposed to wife battering it took an integrative approach. As to the program's contents and operational techniques it has not only reflected the major characteristics of Korean culture but also emphasized the emotional approach, thus coping with the understanding or expression of feelings and the enhancement of self-esteem.
Third, two experimental studies with different subjects (Experimental Study I and II) were conducted to examine program effectiveness. For Experimental Study I the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design was employed for five children in a public shelter for a total of eight group sessions in a period of three weeks. As a result, the experimental group has shown an overall significant improvement in scores on emotion, aggressiveness, social skills, and tolerance on wife battering. There was also a positive change in self-esteem, even if it was not statistically significant. For the open-ended questions there was a considerable decrease of those who said they would break up the fight, while more respondents chose for a desirable course of action such as self-protection and call for outside help. There was, however, no change on the causes for wife battering.
In Experimental Study II the Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used for six children, who are low-grade elementary school students in the after-class program in a social welfare center and exposed to wife battering. A total of eight group sessions were conducted for four weeks. After their participation in the program, the children under examination have shown an overall improvement on scores on emotion, social skills, self-esteem, and tolerance on wife battering. Additionally, the respondents' reaction to wife battering, asked as an open-ended question, has become more positive. On the other hand, there was no apparent change in aggressiveness or causes for wife battering. In comparing difference scores(pretest/ posttest scores), there were more statistically significant changes in social skills, self-esteem, and tolerance on wife battering in the experimental group than in the control group. As to the question of emotion, there was a clear difference between the two groups, even if it was not statistically meaningful. However, there was no difference on aggressiveness or the causes for wife battering between the two groups.
For an individual study of particular cases in the experimental groups any improvement through the programs is largely due to the child s emotional open-mindedness, a close tie between the child and the facilitator, and the mother's care and cooperation. For the children in a divorced family, however, program effectiveness turns out to be highly circumscribed.
The above results have amply demonstrated that in coping with the children exposed to wife battering the program is fairly effective in alleviating their emotion, improving their social skills and self-esteem, reducing their tolerance on wife battering and acquiring their positive reaction. In reducing their aggressiveness or on the causes of wife battering, however, there was neither a definitive conclusion nor a positive result, thus requiring a further corroboration with other studies or an improvement on the program.
The study offers the following two recommendations for clinical social work practice. First, various problem areas should be included in an intervention plan and an integrative approach should be taken in a group program for improving adjustment of children exposed to wife battering. Second, great efforts should be made to develop clinical social work intervention methods suitable to our own culture and reality.
Finally, the study offers the following six recommendations to develop an effective program for improving the adjustment problems of the children exposed to wife battering. First, active parental support and cooperation, together with their own changes, should be elicited so that an intervention plan on both the children and their parents can be simultaneously implemented. Second, a special attention should be paid to reflect the characteristics of the individual children in the entire program and its process. Third, the program needs to incorporate the cases of divorced or other defect families. Fourth, a diversity of therapeutic tools need to be devised to effectively intervene in the children exposed to wife battering.
