1) Rem Koolhaasl
3) Ito Toyo

Futurist and civilization critic Alvin Toffler (1928-2016), in his work "The Third Wave," discusses a new paradigm represented by the development of information and communication technologies, leading to the modern information society. Toffler depicts the contemporary society as the epicenter of an exploding 'information bomb,' describing it with imagery fragments pouring down like a shower due to this 'information explosion.' This implies that a fundamental transformation is taking place in the way we perceive and act upon the world. The perspective of 'meaningful interaction' by the experiential subject, experiencing and perceiving constantly generated new images, is becoming increasingly important in the continual generation of meaning from an 'image-semiotic' standpoint.
French philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman (1953-), who extends traditional art history into the 'historiography of images,' explores the semantic interaction of images. He understands images not as frozen objects but as dynamic acts and processes with inherent movement. Didi-Huberman introduces the dialectical image and the technique of montage as its operative principle. Even after the creation of an image, there exists a potential for continuous generation of new meanings depending on the experiential subject recognizing the image. This involves the collision of heterogeneous times and elements, resembling the characteristics of neutral spaces in modern architecture.
If the program in modern functionalist architecture had a simple, singular meaning of basic functionality, the program in contemporary architecture takes on a complex structure with a close relationship to human life and the collective entity of society. Contemporary architecture should be viewed as an ever-changing, indeterminate space for multiple meanings to emerge, reflecting diverse lives and forming multilayered relationships within the context of the evolving urban environment. This emphasizes the importance of architecture as a structure with the potential for varied interpretations by users, despite being the same space, rather than a conclusive building that presents all the functions and intentions of the structure. It displays the characteristics of neutral spaces, providing a potential for different perceptions, and underscores the significance of architecture as a meaningful and continually evolving place that tells the story of life, rather than a fixed, function-driven physical space.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the neutral aspects that generate multiple meanings through Georges Didi-Huberman's dialectical montage theory. Building on this examination, the research seeks to explore the potential of neutral spaces in contemporary architecture from the perspective of meaning generation. Building on theoretical considerations, the study has primarily analyzed the works of contemporary architects—Rem Koolhaas, SANAA, Ito Toyo, and Bernard Tschumi—within the context of 'diagrammatic processes, programs, setting of internal and external spaces, and boundary considerations, along with user participation' in contemporary architecture.
1) Rem Koolhaas advances the architectural discourse of modernity through the concepts of mixture and heterogeneity, causing a blending and collision between various heterogeneous programs through the overlap of multiple programs. Furthermore, the process of his architectural conceptualization takes place in the contrast between polarized concepts, achieving conceptual neutrality. This contrast unfolds architectural thinking through diagrams that juxtapose black and white.
2) SANAA focuses on the concept of 'boundaries' as a perspective that forms various relationships. Departing from physically fixing boundaries, SANAA aims for an 'open architecture' that neutralizes structures in various ways, presenting a multiplicity of potentials for organic connections between the internal and external, as well as diverse relationships.
3) Toyo Ito dismantles the traditional dichotomy between the surface influenced by the power of modern architecture and its supporting structure. By blurring the boundaries between structure and surface, as well as structure and space, Ito creates ambiguity. Buildings, in this context, act as neutral spaces containing the potential for events.
4) Bernard Tschumi focuses on ambiguity and heterogeneity in contemporary architecture and the city. He attempts to derive architecture from the deconstruction and reconstruction of traditional architectural forms and programs, utilizing an editing method. Additionally, he pays attention to the constant collision and meaning-generating actions that occur between the city and architecture, between programs and spaces, and among events. Tschumi creates a backdrop filled with the potential for unexpected events and the evocation of new emotions through the continual collisions within these contexts.
In this manner, neutral spaces in contemporary architecture are seen as open relationships with the potential for constant reinterpretation of space, breaking away from traditional fixed physical spatial systems. Through the unfinished open relationships of the indeterminate system, these spaces are expected to function as places that trigger non-routine, unfamiliar experiences, and emergent behaviors in the interaction between users and architectural space. There is the potential for continuous generation of multiple meanings in such spaces. In considering the demands of contemporary society, which embraces not a singular entity but rather a heterogeneous diversity or fragmented whole, it is hoped that these spaces can function as places with architectural significance. By accommodating various differences and changes, and by endowing them with multiple temporal possibilities, there is an expectation that these spaces will unfold new relationships and continually generate multiple meanings.
