Older adults living alone have become increasingly vulnerable to social isolation as family and community ties weaken amid rapid societal change, and they often experience difficulties in using digital information in fast-evolving digital environments, which can adversely affect their mental health. However, previous studies have provided only limited empirical analysis of the pathways through which social capital and digital competence influence mental health and have insufficiently accounted for older adults’ information access and capacity to use digital technologies within these changing digital contexts. This study utilized data from the 2023 National Survey of Older Koreans, focusing on individuals aged 70 and over who live alone. After excluding cases with missing values, 2,314 respondents were included in the final sample (21.1% male, 78.9% female; mean age = 78.2 ± 5.6 years). Social capital was measured through structural, cognitive, and relational dimensions, while mental health encompassed life satisfaction and depression. Digital literacy was assessed based on smartphone and internet usage, operational skills, and online information utilization. The research hypotheses were as follows: (1) social capital in older adults living alone affects their mental health (depression, life satisfaction); (2) social capital impacts digital literacy; (3) digital literacy affects mental health; and (4) digital literacy mediates the relationship between social capital and mental health. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted to examine variable distributions and interrelations, while hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to test direct effects of social capital and the mediating effects of digital literacy on mental health. The findings suggest that enhancing the mental health of older adults living alone requires an integrated approach that simultaneously strengthens social networks—through expanded community participation— and promotes digital competence via education and support programs. Specifically, local initiatives such as hobby groups, social clubs, volunteer work, and participation in civic organizations can help broaden emotional and instrumental support networks. At the same time, digital literacy education tailored for older adults may reduce depression and improve life satisfaction. Furthermore, providing targeted digital welfare support for low-income and very old single-person households can maximize the protective effects of digital literacy on mental health. In conclusion, this study contributes academically and practically by proposing and empirically validating a structural model integrating social capital, digital literacy, and mental health among older adults living alone, thereby emphasizing the mediating role of digital literacy in this relationship.
