The music culture of Korea has been developed early. Various music has been flowed in and developed continually by each age since the beginning of history. Transmitted from generation to generation like this, Korean traditional music is being perform by orchestras created under the name of the so-called creative traditional music orchestra all over the country.
Currently, several tens of traditional music orchestras are in operation nationwide. Traditional music orchestras which play conventional music, including newly composed music, are mainly performing a newly composed music-centered repertoire. It is a long time ago that they used Korean musical instruments as their musical instruments but western staff notation as their musical note, besides, the conductor system was introduced already.
Therefore, this literature tried to inquire into conductors of traditional music orchestras overall. First of all, it examined the history and trend of Korean traditional music and case studies on traditional music in other countries. Also, it considered several examples relevant to Korean traditional concept of conducting, such as Bak indicating the beginning and ending of court concerted music(ensemble) and the role of Janggu that leads melody at playing traditional music in concert.
And this literature further examined a bandmaster giving a word of command in order to tell the beginning and ending of the music at performing Daechwita(full-scale military band), the Korean traditional military music. Finally, Kkwaenggwari is the lead instrument in samulnori and the player is called sangsoe, and this literature examined sangsoe' role too.
Moreover, the body of this literature considered the first traditional music orchestra of Korea and the traditional music orchestras occurring at each local level.
Lastly, this literature intended to take several pieces of musical notes as example about the concept of Jangdan(rhythm, beat) that appears only in Korean traditional music, especially how to do conducting beating in offbeat line' rhythm, and present conducting beating. It analyzed the works of only three persons(Im Pyung-yong, Park Bum-hun and Kim Man-seok), well-known composers and conductors, with respect to an unique form of conducting beating in traditional music orchestras and made the alterative proposal, with limited to offbeat line' rhythm.
If summarize the above-mentioned contents, the subject of this literature was a study on conducting of traditional music orchestra.
In the process of examining these, this literature looked into the concepts of conductor in other countries and musical instruments corresponded to the concept of conductor in Korean traditional music as well as case studies on Korean and foreign traditional music.
In conclusion, it looked into the birth and unfolding process of Korean modern traditional music orchestra, studied on what conducting beating is desirable by traditional music rhythm and proposed another idea in its own way.
