변신 모티프의 현대적 의미 : 민담과 현대 소설의 연계성을 중심으로 = (The) Modern Meaning of Metamorphosis Motif : The Linking Between Folktale & Modern novel

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 문학 주제학적인 관점에서 민담과 현대 소설에 나타나는 변신 모티프의 연계성을 고찰한 것이다. 민담의 외형적이고 비현실적인 변신은 현대 사회의 특성에 따라 그 의미가 변용·확대되면서 문학 작품에 수용되어 텍스트의 소재들을 연관짓고, 작품으로서의 구조를 구축하고, 주제를 수립하는 모티프로서의 기능을 지속적으로 수행하고 있다.
변신 모티프를 연구함에 있어 변신의 양상을 분류하고 그 의미를 신화적 세계 속에서 파악하는 것으로부터 이제는 더 나아가 설화와 현대 소설에 나타나는 변신의 상호 연계성을 고찰하고 변신 이야기의 교육적 구조를 탐색하는 문학 교육론적인 측면의 연구에 이르기까지 변신의 의미를 확대시키고 있다. 이미 외국의 연구자인 S. Thompson은 변신 모티프의 양상을 정리하였고, H. Skulsky, Horst S. & Daemmrich 그리고 I. Massey 등은 내면 세계의 변신으로까지 그 의미를 확대시켜 놓았다.
민담의 변신은 신체적·비현실적·환상적인 형태로 나타나는데 그것은 인간을 중심으로 하여 神的인 초월자와 같이 되는가 짐승 혹은 사물로 퇴락하는가에 따라 상승 전진형과 하강 퇴행형, 그리고 둘의 혼합적인 양상으로 나타나며, 그 양상들은 현대 사회의 특성에 따라 그 의미가 변용·확대되어 현대 소설에 나타나고 있는 것이다.
민담에 나타나는 변신의 양상과 의미를 살피기 위해서는 먼저 민담에 등장하는 인물들의 기능에 따라 각각의 구조를 분석해 볼 필요가 있다. 민담에서는 인물들의 '행위'(기능)가 중요하며 그것이 이야기의 구조를 구축해 나가기 때문이다. 그리하여 인물의 기능을 중심으로 하여 '3중의 보조 요소'와 모호한 시작과 행(불행)의 단순한 결말 등의 특징까지 곁들여 고려하며 구조를 분석하고 변신의 의미를 파악한 결과 변신의 의미는 부정적인 현실의 초월·소외 극복·진정한 자아 탐색임을 알 수 있다.
이러한 민담에 나타난 변신은 상승적이든 하강적이든 문학의 효용성을 높여 주는 모티프로서의 기능을 충분히 발휘하고 있으며, 인간 내면적인 것으로 확대되는 현대 소설의 변신으로 연계되고 있다고 할 수 있다.
사회 구조가 복잡·다양해짐에 따라 변신 모티프의 의미가 다소 확대·변용되어 현대 소설에 나타난다는 것은 너무나 당연한 일이라고 할 수 있다. 실제로 현대 소설에 나타난 변신을 살펴보면 〈가면고〉에 나타난 독고민의 변신의 의미는 [기대/초월]로, 〈꺼삐딴리〉의 이인국의 변신은 [기만/좌절]이라는 의미로, 〈가면의 꿈〉에서의 명식의 변신을 [나타냄/사라짐]이라는 의미로 연결시켜 볼 수 있다.
〈가면고〉의 주인공 독고민은 전쟁이라는 극단적 상황 하에서 자신을 잃어버린 상태로부터 출발하여 이기심을 버리고 진정한 사랑을 통해서 자기 구원에 이르는 상승 전진형의 변신을 이루어 낸다. 이것은 이기적인 세계 즉 타인을 희생하여 성공하려는 지나침을 깨닫고 자기를 찾아가는 [기대/초월]을 의미한다.〈꺼삐딴 리〉의 주인공 이인국의 변신은 죽음의 고비들이 산재해 있는 상황 속에서 진정한 인간으로서의 모습을 포기하고 살아남기 위한 몸부림으로, 사회는 물론 자신마저 [기만/좌절]하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 〈가면의 꿈〉의 주인공 명식은 사회적 기준에 맞춰 성공한 자신의 모습이 거짓된 가면이라는 것을 깨닫고 진정한 자신의 모습을 찾아 변신을 시도한다. 명식의 이러한 [나타냄/사라짐]의 변신은 죽음으로 끝을 맺는 것이 아니라 독자의 삶에서 계속 추구될 문제로 남는다. 바로 이것이 진정한 문학의 가치라고 할 수 있으며 문학 교육적인 측면에서의 문학의 효용성이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
요컨대 시대와 장르를 초월하여 변신 원망은 문학에 계속 반영될 것이고, 변신 모티프는 그것을 한 차원 높은 주제로 구현해내며 영원히 문학의 한 중요한 요소로 작용할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis studied linking of metamorphosis motif, which appears in the folktales and modern novels in the perspective of literary thematics. The metamorphosis in folktale that is outward and unrealistic, experiences change and enlargement in it's meaning, is used in the literary work, and links motifs of the text. Also, it builds the structure as a literary work, constantly executes the function as of motif, which establishes the theme.
In a study of metamorphosis motif, starting from classifying the aspects of metamorphosis and grasping its meaning in the mythical world, covering the study of mutual linking of metamorphosis which appears in the folktale or modern novels, and ranging the study of the aspects of literary education which searches educational structure in a metamorphosis story, meaning of metamorphosis is being enlarged. S. Thompson, a foreign researcher, already identified aspects of metamorphosis motifs. H. Skulsky, Horst S. & I. Daemmrich, and I. Massey, etc enlarged its meaning to the metamorphosis of the inner world.
Metamorphosis in the folktale expressed in body-related, unrealistic and fantastic form. It was divided into two parts, one is called 'ascending forward' that it arrives at the same state as transcendent similar to the God from the focus of human, and the other is called 'descending backward' that reaches the state of beast or a thing. However, influenced by characteristics of modern society which shows various aspects due to the development of industry in modern times, its meaning is enlarged and shows the compound meaning both of ascending side and descending side as well as ascending forward or descending backward.
To study the aspects and meaning of metamorphosis that appears in the folktale, first it needs to analyze it's structure each according to the function of characters who appear in the folktale. 'Activity (function)' of a character is important in the folktale and it builds the structure of the story. Thus, through the analysis of the structure and the grasp of the meaning of the metamorphosis considering 'complementary three-fold elements' focused on the function of character and, in addition, characteristics including vague beginning and simple ending of happiness (unhappiness), it is found that the meaning of metamorphosis is for the transcendence of negative reality, recovery of the alienation, and research of the real identity of the self.
No matter what it is ascending forward or descending backward, the metamorphosis which appears in the folktale sufficiently demonstrates the function as a motif of exalting the efficiency of the literature and it can be seen to be linked to the metamorphosis of the modern novels which is enlarged to the inner world of the human.
In accordance with the structure of the society getting complex and various, it can be granted that the meaning of the metamorphosis motif appears in the modern novels, somewhat enlarged and changed. In reality, if studied the metamorphosis which appears in the modern novels, it can be linked the metamorphosis of Gomin Dok in the 〈Gamyeongo〉 as meaning to [expectation/transcendence], the change of Inkuk Lee in the 〈Ggeobbittanlee〉 to [deceit/frustration], and the change of Myongsik in the 〈Dream of Mask〉 to [appearance/disappearance].
Gomin Dok, a hero of 〈Gamyeongo〉 shows the metamorphosis of ascending forward starting from the state of the loss of the self under the extreme situation of the war reaching redemption of himself by throwing away of the selfishness and through real love. This means realizing of unreasonableness in the pursuit of success at the sacrifice of another man, i.e., the world of selfishness, and seeking the self, which is [expectation/transcendence]. It can be seen that the change of Inkuk Lee, a hero in the 〈Ggeobbittanlee〉 is to abandon aspect of a real humanity under the situations which instances of being killed are scattered and, as a way of keeping on living, is to deceive/frustrate himself as well as the society. Myeonsik, a hero of 〈Dream of Mask〉 realizes that his successful appearance in the social standard is his false mask and seeks to metamorphosis his real identity. Myeonsik's such a metamorphosis does not end as his death but remains a question to be sought in the lives of readers. It can be referred as a very real value of the literature and as efficiency of literature in terms of educational aspect.
In short, desire for metamorphosis will be reflected on the literature regardless of times and its genre, the motif of metamorphosis will realize it as a theme enhanced one level up and will act on as an important element of literature forever.
