In today's art environment, the audience is identified not as a passive position to grasp the work only from the producer's intention, but as a subject that performs an active action that can give a new and diverse meaning through the creative activities of individual audiences. In this trend, architecture is also attempting potential architecture in various layers of meaning to the audience, as Peter Eisenman identifies architectural works as “the text of between,” rather than limiting the active actions of users, such as functionalism and rationalism of modernism in the past. Against this background, the Aesthetic of reception position suggests that writer-work-reader interaction occurs through relational texts, and literary works are created in various meanings depending on the inmates who interpret the work.
Therefore, this study applied a structure in which multivalence are created through relational texts from an Aesthetic of reception standpoint to architecture and looked at it from a new perspective. We examined the perspective of relational texts, a new meaning-generating system through active participation of users and interaction of architecture. Through this, it was studied that modern architecture is not limited to the finished place with unique values and identities rooted there through the architect's intention and historical process, but as a process that is constantly carried out, multivalence can be created through interrelationships that accept users emotions and interpretations.
In particular, the analysis focused on the works of four architects, SANAA, Sou Fujimoto, Rem Koolhaas, and Peter Zumthor, who were discussed based on users' various interpretations, program organization, experiences, texts, and places in modern architecture. Through this, it was confirmed that modern architecture works as a relational text that becomes a place in multivalence by establishing a close relationship with users. it is hoped that architecture will no longer work as a functioning machine, but as a “medium that conveys experiences” that create various meanings through interaction with users.
