정여울 한림대학교 인문학연구소 2011 인문학 연구 Vol.17 No.-
Recently, there are many characters who expose their desire through consuming goods in Korean novels. Consumption was not main theme of Korean novels in past days, however, consumption emerged to main theme in recent years. Writers like Park Young-ok, Jung E-Hyun, Kim Jung-hyuk, Kim Hun, have shown much interest in consumption of everyday lives. What is the meaning of consumption in our lives? How can we understand the meaning of consumption through literature? These are the questions of many Korean novels at present. Paik Young-ok, Jung E-Hyun delineate young women`s desire and anxiety through their consuming habits. Characters in their novels are suffering from their own desire for luxury goods and perfect guys. Desire for luxury goods and perfect guys are recognized as the same ‘products’ in the eyes of young women. Kim Jung-hyuk describes eccentric mens` desire to fulfill their special tastes. They are not blamed for their exceeding consumption because they do not like having deep relationship with women. Kim Hun`s novel shows keen insight into the tragic of inevitable consumption like wedding or funeral. Korean novels were shy of expressing desire for free consumption and people`s snobbism, but now they are positively analyzing popular desire for consuming and snobbism.
