        Proposed mechanism in the change of cellular composition in the outer medullary collecting duct during potassium homeostasis.

        <P>Potassium depletion (K?-D) induces hypertrophy and hyperplasia of collecting duct cells, and potassium repletion (K?-R) induces regression of these changes. The purpose of this study was to examine the time courses of the changes in cellular composition, the origin of intercalated cells (ICs) and the mechanism responsible for these changes. SD rats received K?-depleted diets for 1, 7, or 14 days. After K?-D for 14 days some of the rats received normal diets for 1, 3, 5, or 7 days. In the inner stripe of the outer medulla, K?-D increased significantly the number and proportion of H?-ATPase-positive ICs, but decreased the proportion of H?-ATPase-negative principal cells (PCs). However, proliferation was limited to H?-ATPase-negative PCs. During K?-R, the cellular composition was recovered to control level. Apoptosis increased during K?-R and exclusively limited in H?-ATPase-negative PCs. Double immunolabeling with antibodies to PC and IC markers identified both cells negative or positive for all markers during both K?-D and K?-R. Electron microscopic observation showed that ultrastructure of AE1-positive some cells were similar to AE1-negative some cells during K?-R. LC3 protein expression increased significantly and autophagic vacuoles appeared particularly in PCs on days 14 of K?-D and in ICs on days 3 of K?-R. These results suggest that PCs and ICs may interconvert in response to changes in dietary K+ availability and that autophagic pathways may be involved in the interconversion.</P>

        Relationship between Stress Gene Polymorphisms and Litter Size by AI in Pigs

        This study was performed to investigate the relationship between PSS-HSP70 gene polymorphism and artificial insemination (AI) reproductivity in the pigs. The RFLP polymorphism of PSS and the SSCP polymorphisms of HSP70 K1, K3 and K4 PCR product were detected different patterns. In the experiment for AI of fresh semen, spring and fall season showed higher litter size born of 10.89 head than 10.47 head of summer season. Landrace was showed higher litter size of 9.96 head than that of Duroc and Yorkshire (p<0.05). Stress relating PSS and HSP70 polymorphism of PSS-Normal, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-AB, K4-AA showd a highest litter size born of 10.97 head and litter size born alive of 10.69 head than that of the other polymorphisms(p<0.05). In the experiment for AI of frozen semen, effects of season and pig breeds were not showed for litter size born. The stress relating polymorphism of PSS-Carrier, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-BB, K4-AB showed highest litter size born of 11.29 head and litter size born alive of 10.82 head and PSS-Normal, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-AB, K4-AA showed the lowest litter size born of 8.48 head and litter size born alive of 7.33 head than that of the other polymorphisms(p<0.05). These results suggest that AI litter size born for the stress of forzen thawed semen may be affected by PSS and HSP70 polymorphism in pigs.

      • Novel effects of FTY720 on perinuclear reorganization of keratin network induced by sphingosylphosphorylcholine: Involvement of protein phosphatase 2A and G-protein-coupled receptor-12

        <P>Sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC) evokes perinuclear reorganization of keratin 8 (K8) filaments and regulates the viscoelasticity of metastatic cancer cells leading to enhanced migration. Few studies have addressed the compounds modulating the viscoelasticity of metastatic cancer cells. We studied the effects of sphingosine (SPH), sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), FTY720 and FTY720-phosphate (FTY720P) on SPC-induced K8 phosphorylation and reorganization using Western blot and confocal microscopy, and also evaluated the elasticity of PANC-1 cells by atomic force microscopy. FTY720, FTY720P, SPH, and SIP concentration-dependently inhibited SPC-evoked phosphorylation and reorganization of K8, and migration of PANC-1 cells. SPC triggered reduction and narrow distribution of elastic constant K and conversely, FTY720 blocked them. A common upstream regulator of JNK and ERK, protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) expression was reduced by SPC, but was restored by FTY720 and FTY72P. Butyryl forskolin, a PP2A activator, suppressed SPC-induced K8 phosphorylation and okadaic acid, a PP2A inhibitor, induced K8 phosphorylation. Gene silencing of PP2A also led to K8 phosphorylation, reorganization and migration. We also investigated the involvement of GPR12, a high-affinity SPC receptor, in SPC-evoked keratin phosphorylation and reorganization. GPR12 siRNA suppressed the SPC-triggered phosphorylation and reorganization of K8. GPR12 overexpression stimulated keratin phosphorylation and reorganization even without SPC. FTY720 and FTY720P suppressed the GPR12-induced phosphorylation and reorganization of K8. The collective data indicates that FTY720 and FTY720P suppress SPC-induced phosphorylation and reorganization of K8 in PANC-1 cells by restoring the expression of PP2A via GPR12. These findings might be helpful in the development of compounds that modulate the viscoelasticity of metastatic cancer cells and various SPC actions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

        Study on the Increase of Egg Weight and Early Selection based on Part Record in Layer

        산란종계의 란중을 개량하기 위하여 란중에 대한 유전력과 유전상관등의 유전적 모수를 추정한 후 백색 레그혼종 2계통(A, K)에서 주령에 따른 란중의 증가양상을 살펴보았다 또한 선발에 의한 유전적 개량량을 크게 하기 위하여 조기선발을 실시할 경우 조기선발의 최적시기를 찾아내는 것이 중요하므로 년 평균란중에 대한 각 기간별 란중의 상관관계와 아울러 회귀관계를 분석하여 최적 선발시기를 알아보았고 각 기간별 선발에 의한 개량량을 상대적으로 나타내므로써 조기선발에 대한 타당성을 구명하고자 본 시험을 수행하였으며 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 주령이 늘어남에 따라 란중도 증가하였는데 산란초기에서는 증가량이 컸지만 점차 감소하였으며 회귀방정식으로 나타낸 증가량은 A, K계통에서 주당 각각 0.46g과 0.83g이었다. 년 평균 란중에 대한 각 기간별 란중의 회귀계수는 29-32주령의 평균란중이 0.86(A), 0.88(K)로 나타나 가장 큰 수치를 보였다. 45-48주령의 평균란중을 기준으로 했을 때의 선발에 대한 각 기간 평균란중의 선발상대효율에서는 A계통에서 33-36주령, K통계에서 29-32주령의 추정치가 가장 크게 나타나서 이 시기에서의 조기선발에, 대한 타당성을 보여주었다. The records on 787 white Leghorn hens from two different strains, A and K were wed in this study to find out the pattern of increase in egg weight with age and the optimum age of early selection for maximizing the genetic gain. The pattern of increase in egg weight with age in two lines which was expressed on graph showed that the amount of increase was larger in the early part of the laying year and it decreased gradually. Regression equations suggested that egg weight increased linearly with age at the rate of 0.46 gram per week for line A and 0.83 gram for line K. And in the regression analyses of each period mean egg weight on annual mean egg weight, the coefficients of EW 30 that is mean egg weight from 29 weeks of age to 32 weeks of age were 0.86 for line A, 0.88 for line K, and those were the highest figures among the all regression coefficients of each mean egg weight on annual mean egg weight. In estimating the relative selection efficiency of each period mean egg weight on annual mean egg weight in EW 46, selection on EW 34 for line A and on EW 30 for line K was the most efficient for improving egg weight. These results suggested that one periods from 29 weeks of age to 36 weeks of age could be used for the best predictable time for improving annual mean egg weight.

      • A Study on the Mossbauer Effect of Fe ion in Alkali Borate Glass

        酸化鐵을 넣은 Alkali Borate 非晶質 유리를 만들어 Mossbauer Spectrum으로 Mossbauer parameters와 철 ion의 狀態에 대해서 硏究되었다. 試料의 成分은 X% A, (100-X)% B?O?, 4% Fe?O?로 하여 A는 K?O, Na?O, 및 K?O이고, X=10, 20 및 30을 취했다. 이 混合物을 잘 섞어 電氣爐에서 900℃ 溫度로 約 2時間동안 융용시켰다. I.S.와 Q.S.는 X가 增加함에 따라 減少함을 보였고, Li-Na-K의 原子半徑에 따라 I.S.는 增加함을 보이나 Q.S.는 감소함을 보였다. 線?은 X가 增加함에 따라, Li-Na-K 順序로 減少함을 보였다. Amorphous alkali borate glasses were prepared to contain 4mole% of ferric oxide as impurity. Mossbauer parameters and the state of iron in alkali borate glasses were studied by Mossbauer spectra. X% A?O, (100-X)% B?O? 4% Fe?O?, where A=Li, Na or K and X=10, 20 or 30 are composed, where prepared. Mixtures were melted in air in furnace at 900℃ for two hours. Isomer shift and quadrupole splitting were decreased according to increasing of X component, and according to increasing of X component. Isomer shift was increased but quadrupole splitting was decreased. And the line width was decreased according to increasing of X component and Li-Na-K series.

        Y/Gd-free yellow Lu<sub>3</sub>Al<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub>:Ce<sup>3+</sup> phosphor for white LEDs

        <P>Solid solubility limit of Ce3+ ions into Lu-based garnet, Lu3(1-x)Ce3xAl5O12, was determined as below 6.7 mol% (3x < 0.2 mol) through Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns. Above the solid solubility limit (3x >= 0.2 mol), Lu3((1-x))Ce(3x)Al(5)O(12) phosphors showed the significant redshift to the yellow spectral region without Y3+ and Gd3+ ions. The redshift was explained in terms of the local compressive strain at the Ce3+ sites. The optimized sample (3x=0.4 mol) had a dominant emission wavelength of 548 nm, color coordinate of CIEx=0.421, CIEy=0.548, quantum efficiency of 80%, absorbance of 91%, lumen maintenance of 90% and high color stability at 473 K under 450 nm excitation wavelength, suggesting substitutability for the commercial yellow (Y, Gd)(3)(Al, Ga)(5)O-12:Ce3+ phosphor. The measured decay times at higher Ce3+ concentration are significantly shortened at higher temperature than that of those at lower Ce3+ concentration. The yellow Lu2.6Ce0.4Al5O12 and a commercial red (Sr, Ca)AlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphor were applied to the pc-WLED, it gave an excellent luminous efficiency (138 lm/W) with a slightly lower color rendering index (Ra =76.4) under correlated color temperature of 6500 K compared to those of the (Y, Gd)(3)(Al, Ga)(5)O-12:Ce3+-based one (136 lm/W, Ra =78.7). Especially, the quantities of the used phosphors were significantly decreased by 20% for the yellow LuAG:Ce and by 40% for the red (Sr, Ca)AlSiN3:Eu2+. Thus, the Y/Gd-free pure LuAG:Ce yellow phosphors can be used as alternative to the commercial yellow YAG:Ce phosphor. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

      • Control of phonon transport by the formation of the Al2O3 interlayer in Al2O3-ZnO superlattice thin films and their in-plane thermoelectric energy generator performance

        <P>Recently, significant progress has been made in increasing the figure-of-merit (ZT) of various nanostructured materials, including thin-film and quantum dot superlattice structures. Studies have focused on the size reduction and control of the surface or interface of nanostructured materials since these approaches enhance the thermopower and phonon scattering in quantum and superlattice structures. Currently, bismuth-tellurium-based semiconductor materials are widely employed for thermoelectric (TE) devices such as TE energy generators and coolers, in addition to other sensors, for use at temperatures under 400 K. However, new and promising TE materials with enhanced TE performance, including doped zinc oxide (ZnO) multilayer or superlattice thin films, are also required for designing solid-state TE power generating devices with the maximum output power density and for investigating the physics of in-plane TE generators. Herein, we report the growth of Al2O3/ZnO (AO/ZnO) superlattice thin films, which were prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD), and the evaluation of their electrical and TE properties. All the in-plane TE properties, including the Seebeck coefficient (S), electrical conductivity (sigma), and thermal conductivity (kappa), of the AO/ZnO superlattice (with a 0.82 nm-thick AO layer) and AO/ZnO films (with a 0.13 nm-thick AO layer) were evaluated in the temperature range 40-300 K, and the measured S, s, and. were -62.4 and -17.5 mu V K-1, 113 and 847 (Omega cm)(-1), and 0.96 and 1.04 W m(-1) K-1, respectively, at 300 K. Consequently, the in-plane TE ZT factor of AO/ZnO superlattice films was found to be similar to 0.014, which is approximately two times more than that of AO/ZnO films (ZT of similar to 0.007) at 300 K. Furthermore, the electrical power generation efficiency of the TE energy generator consisting of four couples of n-AO/ZnO superlattice films and p-Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (p-BST) thin-film legs on the substrate was demonstrated. Surprisingly, the output power of the 100 nm-thick n-AO/ZnO superlattice film/p-BST TE energy generator was determined to be similar to 1.0 nW at a temperature difference of 80 K, corresponding to a significant improvement of similar to 130% and similar to 220% compared to the 100 nm-thick AO/ZnO film/p-BST and n-BT/p-BST film generators, respectively, owing to the enhancement of the TE properties, including the power factor of the superlattice film.</P>

      • Analysis of 22 Y chromosomal STR haplotypes and Y haplogroup distribution in Pathans of Pakistan

        We analyzed haplotypes for 22 Y chromosomal STRs (Y-STRs), including 17 Yfiler loci (DYS19, DYS385a/b, DYS389I/II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DY438, DYS439, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS635 and Y-GATA-H4) and five additional STRs (DYS388, DYS446, DYS447, DYS449 and DYS464), and Y chromosomal haplogroup distribution in 270 unrelated individuals from the Pathans residing in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan using in-house multiplex PCR systems. Each Y-STR showed diversities ranging from 0.2506 to 0.8538, and the discriminatory capacity (DC) was 73.7% with 199 observed haplotypes using 17 Yfiler loci. By the addition of 5 Y-STRs to the Yfiler system, the DC was increased to 85.2% while showing 230 observed haplotypes. Among the additional 5 Y-STRs, DYS446, DYS447 and DYS449 were major contributors to enhancing discrimination. In the analysis of molecular variance, the Pathans of this study showed significant differences from other Pathan populations as well as neighboring population sets. In Y-SNP analysis, a total of 12 Y chromosomal haplogroups were observed and the most frequent haplogroup was R1a1a with 49.3% frequency. To obtain insights on the origin of Pathans, the network analysis was performed for the haplogroups G and Q observed from the Pathans and the Jewish population groups including Ashkenazim and Sephardim, but little support for a Jewish origin could be found. In the present study, we report Y-STR population data in Pathans of Pakistan, and we emphasize the need for adding additional markers to the commonly used 17 Yfiler loci to achieve more improved discriminatory capacity in a population with low genetic diversity.
