      • Investigation of the effects on earthquake behavior and rough construction costs of the slab type in reinforced concrete buildings

        In the architectural design process, the selection and configuration of the structural system significantly affect the earthquake behaviours of the reinforced concrete buildings. The main purpose of this study, the effects on the earthquake performances and the rough construction cost of the buildings of the slab type in reinforced concrete buildings are to examine comparatively for different local soil classes. The results obtained from this study have been determined that the building model having slabs with beams is safer compared to other types of slabs, especially when considering the vertical bearing structural elements (columns). It also shows that other types of slab, except for slab with beams, reduce the earthquake performances of reinforced concrete buildings, increase the displacement values, 1st natural vibration period values and the cost of rough construction. This matter reveals that slab type is quite important and the preference of beamed slabs in reinforced concrete buildings to be constructed in earthquake zones would be more appropriate in terms of safety and cost.

      • Possible Roles of the Xenobiotic Transporter P-glycoproteins Encoded by the MDR1 3435 C>T Gene Polymorphism in Differentiated Thyroid Cancers

        Background: P-glycoprotein (Pgp), encoded by the multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) gene, is an efflux transporter which plays an important role in pharmacokinetics. The current preliminary study was designed to determine associations between a germ-line polymorphism in the MDR1 gene with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). Materials and Methods: In the current case-control study, 60 differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC)- 45 papillary TC (PTC), 9 follicular TC(FTC) and 6 well-differentiated tumors of uncertain malignant potential (WDT-UMP) were examined. Results were compared to a healthy control group (n=58) from the same population. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood with EDTA and the target gene was genotyped by real-time PCR. Results: Carriers of the variant allele of MDR1 exon 26 polymorphism were at 2.8-fold higher risk of DTC than the control group (odds ratio [OR]: 0.3805, 95% confidence interval [Cl]: 0.1597-0.9065 (p> 0.046). Conclusions: Presented results suggest that the MDR1 3435TT genotype might influence risk of development of DTC and that the CC genotype might be linked to a poor prognosis. Large-scale studies are now needed to validate this association.

        Computational analysis of hydrodynamics of shear-thinning viscoelastic fluids in a square lid-driven cavity flow

        Computational results for steady laminar flow of three different shear thinning fluids lid-driven square cavity are presented. The viscoelastic nature of the fluids is represented by linear and exponential Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT) and Giesekus constitutive models. Computations are based on finite volume technique incorporating non-uniform collocated grids. The stress terms in the constitutive equations are approximated by higher-order and bounded scheme of Convergent and Universally Bounded Interpolation Scheme for the Treatment of Advection (CUBISTA). Effects of the elasticity, inertia as well as constitutive model parameters on the stress and velocity fields, size and intensity of the primary and secondary vortexes are investigated and discussed in detail. Moreover highly accurate benchmark numerical solutions are provided for each considered constitutive model.

        Is craniocaudal dissection of recurrent laryngeal nerve safer than lateral approach: a prospective randomized study comparing both techniques by using continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring

        Purpose: This study was performed to compare the real-time electromyographic (EMG) changes and the rate of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury in craniocaudal and lateral approaches for RLN during thyroidectomy. Methods: One hundred twelve and 86 patients were prospectively randomized to receive lateral (group 1) or craniocaudal (group 2) approach to RLN, respectively, under continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring. Results: Loss of signal (LOS) occurred in 7 (2.0%) of 356 nerves at risk (NAR). LOS was significantly associated with repeated adverse EMG changes and presence of RLN entrapment at the ligament of Berry (LOB), which was accompanied by other clinicopathological or anatomical features, such as tubercle of Zuckerkandl (TZ), extralaryngeal branching, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD), or thyroid lobe volume of >29 cm3 (P = 0.001 and P = 0.030, respectively). The rate of repeated adverse EMG changes and LOS in the NARs with LOB entrapment accompanied by other clinicopathological and anatomical features was higher in group 1 vs. group 2 (11.1% vs. 2.2%, respectively and 9.7% vs. 0%, respectively; P = 0.070). The total rate of vocal cord palsy (VCP) was significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 (P = 0.005). The rate of permanent VCP showed no significant difference between the 2 groups. Conclusion: The craniocaudal approach to the RLN is safer than the lateral approach in the RLNs with entrapment at the LOB accompanied by other features, such as TZ, extralaryngeal branching, hyperthyroidism, ATD, or high thyroid lobe volume.

        Rheological characterization of polyethylene glycol based TiO2 nanofluids

        Rheological characterization of TiO2 nanoparticle dispersions in polyethylene glycol (PEG 200) is presentedover 1-10 wt% particle mass fraction range in terms of shear viscosity, thixotropy and linear viscoelasticity. A stress controlled rheometer fitted by a cone-and-plate system was employed for the rheologicalmeasurements between –10oC and 40oC. The non-linear viscoelastic experiments revealed that TiO2-PEG200 nanofluid exhibits a shear thinning behavior when particle mass fraction exceeds 1%. No appreciablechange in the shear viscosity versus shear rate behavior was detected over the course of four days ofdispersion storage. At high particle concentrations the dispersions had a yield stress that was determined byfitting the results through Herschel-Bukley model. Within the studied range of particle concentration, noevidence of thixotropic behavior was observed. In addition, relative viscosity measured at high shear regionwas found to be independent of the temperature. On the other hand, strong temperature dependency wasobserved at low shear region particularly at high temperatures. Storage and loss moduli of the TiO2-PEG200 nanofluid were determined by frequency sweep measurements with applied stresses in the linearviscoelastic region. It was found that when the applied stress is lower than the corresponding yield stressTiO2-PEG 200 nanofluid showed a gel structure especially at high particle mass concentration.

      • Germ-line MTHFR C677T, FV H1299R and PAI-1 5G/4G Variations in Breast Carcinoma

        Background: Various oncogenes related to cancer have been extensively studied and several polymorphisms have been found to be associated with breast cancer. The current report outlines analysis of germ-line polymorphisms for C677T, A1298C (MTHFR), Leiden, R2 (FV) and 5G/4G (PAI-1) in Turkish breast cancer patients. We studied 51 cases diagnosed with invasive ductal and operable with lymph node-positive breast cancer and 106 women as a control group. Materials and Methods: Peripheric blood-DNA samples were used for genotyping by StripAssay technique which is based on the reverse-hybridization principle and real-time PCR methods and results were compared statistically. Results: The frequency of the MTHFR gene 677T and 1298A alleles were significantly higher in cancer patients than in the healthy subjects. The T allele frequency in codon 677 was 2.3-fold and C allele frequency was 3.1-fold increased in BC when compared to the control group for the MTHFR gene. Both differences were statistically significant (OR: 2.295, CI: 1.283-4.106), p<0.006 and (OR: 3.131, CI:1.826-5.369), p<0.0001 respectively. The R2 allele frequency of FV gene was 5.1-fold increased in the current BC when compared to the control group and that difference was also statistically significant (OR: 5.133, CI: 1.299-20.28), p<0.02. Conclusions: The present data suggest that germ-line polymorphisms of C677T, C1298A for MTHFR and R2 for FV are associated in breast cancer and may be additional prognostic markers related to breast cancer survival. The results now need to be confirmed in a larger group of patients.
