The Modulation Procedure as a Translation Device in Animal Farm and Gandun Dabbobi

        Shu’aibu Mohammed 한국아프리카학회 2010 한국아프리카학회지 Vol.31 No.-

Although Hausa and English have been in contact for a long time, to our knowledge little or no study of the two languages is made in terms of their comparative stylistic aspects in translation. In response to fill such gap, this paper examines the linguistic and cultural relationship between the two languages via Animal Farm (AF) and Gandun Dabbobi (GD). AF is the English source language (SL) text and GD is the Hausa translation. The study is based on Vinay and Darbelnet's (1995) theoretical framework. However, it is restricted to the modulation procedure. The paper is able to establish the close perception of universal views between the two languages. While the translator of AF into GD is noted for his preferences.

Aspects of Stylistics in English-Hausa Text Translations

        Mohammed Shu’aibu 한국아프리카학회 2011 한국아프리카학회지 Vol.33 No.-

This paper examines the stylistics of English and Hausa through the use of Animal Farm (AF) and Gandun Dabbobi (GD). The former is the English SL text and the latter is the Hausa RL text translation. The study is based on the theoretical framework of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995). However, the study limits itself to only the seven basic translation procedures. These are literal, calque, loan/borrowing, transposition, modulation, adaptation and equivalence. The result of this study reveals the predilections of the two languages and serves as a guide to translators especially those involved in working with English and Hausa. This is seen in the choices made by the translator. Such choices by the translator are either compulsory or optional. When they are compulsory the translator has no option but to make changes from the SL text in the RL. Whereas in the case of optional types the translator is expected to either make some changes or maintain the same style as that of the SL text.
