Gender Relations and Women’s Predicament
Lotsmart Fongjong,Susan Weinger,Charles Fonchingong,Roberta Allen 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2006 Asian Women Vol.22 No.2
A review of selected Cameroonian folktales in this paper reveal that folktales are not only sources of entertainment, but that they can also be relied upon for an understanding of the construction and deconstruction of gender relations in some Cameroonian societies. An analysis of these folktales revealed a belief that woman’s biology destines her to procreate, be subordinate to men, avoid important public roles, and have serious character flaws. Childless women who transgress the motherhood mandate are depicted as worthless, revolting and evil. Exceptions to these repeated portrayals of women are rare.
