      • Conventional versus Doxorubicin-Eluting Beads Transarterial Chemoembolization for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: a Tertiary Medical Centre Experience in Malaysia

        Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cancer that is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage. Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is an effective palliative treatment for patients who are not eligible for curative treatment. The two main methods for performing TACE are conventional (c-TACE) or with drug eluting beads (DEB-TACE). We sought to compare survival rates and tumour response between patients undergoing c-TACE and DEB-TACE at our centre. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing either treatment was carried out from January 2009 to December 2014. Tumour response to the procedures was evaluated according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST). Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess and compare the overall survival in the two groups. Results: A total of 79 patients were analysed (34 had c-TACE, 45 had DEB-TACE) with a median follow-up of 11.8 months. A total of 20 patients in the c-TACE group (80%) and 12 patients in the DEB-TACE group (44%) died during the follow up period. The median survival durations in the c-TACE and DEB-TACE groups were $4.9{\pm}3.2$ months and $8.3{\pm}2.0$ months respectively (p=0.008). There was no statistically significant difference noted among the two groups with respect to mRECIST criteria. Conclusions: DEB-TACE demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival rates for patients with unresectable HCC when compared to c-TACE. It is a safe and promising approach and should potentially be considered as a standard of care in the management of unresectable HCC.

        S5 Lipase : An Organic Solvent Tolerant Enzyme

        In this study, an organic solvent tolerant bacterial strain was isolated. This strain was identified as Pseudomonas sp. strain S5, and was shown to degrade BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl-Benzene, and Xylene). Strain S5 generates an organic solvent-tolerant lipase in the late logarithmic phase of growth. Maximum lipase production was exhibited when peptone was utilized as the sole nitrogen source. Addition of any of the selected carbon sources to the medium resulted in a significant reduction of enzyme production. Lower lipase generation was noted when an inorganic nitrogen source was used as the sole nitrogen source. This bacterium hydrolyzed all tested triglycerides and the highest levels of production were observed when olive oil was used as a natural triglyceride. Basal medium containing Tween 60 enhanced lipase production to the most significant degree. The absence of magnesium ions (Mg2+) in the basal medium was also shown to stimulate lipase production. Meanwhile, an alkaline earth metal ion, Na+, was found to stimulate the production of S5 lipase.

        Extraction of reactive dye via synergistic Aliquat 336/D2EHPA using emulsion liquid membrane system

        Facilitated transport of Orange 3R was performed by means of emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) technique containing double extractants of Aliquat 336 and D2EHPA as extractant and synergist extractant, respectively. Cooking palm oil, sorbitan monooleate (Span 80), and sodium hydroxide were used as diluent, surfactant and stripping agent, respectively. Several parameters influencing the extraction of Orange 3R via ELM, namely effect of extraction time, agitator speed, Span 80 concentration and treatment ratio, were experimentally investigated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Results demonstrated that about 91% of Orange 3R was successfully extracted under optimum conditions of 12minutes of extraction time, 413 rpm of agitator speed, 3.2% (w/v) of sorbitan monooleate, and 1 : 9.8 of treatment ratio. Additionally, the aforementioned optimum conditions were found to be more suitable to treat low concentration of Orange 3R (less than 100 ppm) from simulated textile wastewater. The findings reveal that reactive Orange 3R dye is able to be selectively extracted using double extractants via sustainable ELM process as well as providing high potential application in the dye removal from industrial textile wastewater.
