Sc2C2@C82(II) and Sc2C2@C82(III) have been synthesized and chromatographically isolated and characterized by using UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Solid-state 13C and 45Sc NMR on Sc2C2@C82 metallofullerenes provide the rotational activation energy of Sc atoms encapsulated in C82 fullerenes which is lower than that in solution due to crystal field effects on the rate of the rotation.

The in°uences of synthesis parameters on the mean diameter and diameter distribution of as-grown single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using the mist °ow method have been investigated in detail with Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that CVD reaction temperature and °ow rate play an essential role in controlling the mean diameter and the quality of as-grown SWCNTs. Furthermore, we found that the carbon supply kinetics can be a dominant factor to determine the diameter of as-grown SWCNTs in the present mist °ow method. Under a di®erent combination of various parameters, the mean diameter of SWCNTs can be varied from 0.9nm to 1.5nm controllably.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be well-dispersed in water by wrapping with short segments of natural DNA from salmon sperm. We report here the isolated DNA-wrapped SWNT hybrids. Measurements were carried out using UV-vis-NIR, near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A possible charge transport between SWNTs and salmon-DNA is discussed in terms of observed spectral shifts in the photoluminescence spectra.

Polymerization of C60, Ce2@C80, and Lu2@C76 metallofullerenes induced by electron injection from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip has been studied. C60 polymerization has been observed only with C60 multilayer on Au(111) and not with C60 monolayer on Au(111). The Ce2@C80 metallofullerene on Si(111)-7 × 7 also polymerizes by electron injection but has less polymerization reactivity than C60. Interestingly, the Lu2@C76 metallofullerene on Si(111)-7 × 7 does not show any polymerization. Based on these STM observations on the tip-induced polymerization, the direction of the bond formation and the dependence of reactivity on the kind of fullerenes are discussed.
